Question When a relay dies...

What happens to a relay when it's knackered? Specifically the EGI Main Relay. The reason I ask is I've check voltages on the front wiring harness and everything checks out which points to a broken main relay. Checking the relay out of the car results in it clicking as expected...would a dodgy relay still kind of work or are when they shot that's it they won't do anything?

I took the cover off of the relay and had a look and it seems ok.

Well I've bridged the gap where the relay normally sits and everything now works just fine, I tested the relay, but not while it was under load so I guess it was bad in the end. Gotta order a new one and all done.

Thought I'd post again so if somebody else has the same problem they will be saved the trouble I had.

Time to go for a drive.

Glad you finally found the problem! Relays VERY rarely go bad, so that's an odd one that you had there.

Yeah, was quite strange. After searching the forums and Google I could hardly find anything where a relay had died. The main test will come when I get the new relay as the temporary fix doesn't use the circuit that would normally turn the relay on.

I've bridged from the ignition side of the relay socket to the switched side. That way the circuit is still switched and has a fuse just in case.

This thread inspired me to rewrite the chorus to White Lion's "When the Children Cry":

when a relay dies
how can we know it's fried?
cause I tried start this thing
and it seems to be dead again

Lol, didn't really think about it, but I guess it was kind of poetic, maybe you should release a cover.
