1. Its no Toyota Camry and that's why its cool.
2. There are very limited numbers due to lack of production and the nature of the car (ie: go fast, do stupid things, crash, one less RX-7 on the road). Supply and demand.
3. They are straight bad ***.

low milage+good condition+running good=expensive in a sea of crap out there. \

BTW: Have you notice how many have been crashed/parted out, they are getting more and more rare every day!

i got both...a camry and a fd.

92 camry has 197K miles....now has more problem than the FD....: water pump, timing belt, cv joints, shocks, chipped paint all over the place, cracked windshield, shakes a bit at idle, smokes on cold start.

93 FD....113K miles...just driven hard on track, no complaining...some drive could drive it even harder...just some brake fades...and new tires....other than that...fine...

so....who says camry reliable?

wait a second

wait a second....let's back up here....EXPENSIVE?!

Maybe you can call it a bit overpriced, and that's even a stretch...but EXPENSIVE! Now an Aston Martin V12 Vanquish is EXPENSIVE. 15K on average for a good FD? Cheaper than a base model accord. My friend bought her civic new for 16K...a civic. And looking at '95 M3 prices, they are about in the same range as well-maintained/enthusiast fd's, like 15-20K. And the M3 started out costing like 15 grand more, but then it did have a new generation come out.

So I'm really curious to what's going to happen when the rx8 comes out. I mean, from what I've heard from Mazda's press releases it seems like this chasis is probably superior to the fd's. (I'm not saying the RX8 is superior to the fd, just the design is) Bleh, I was looking at this car since '01, and I guess from what people have been saying, meh, I should have bought it then. I've settled for a nice MR2 turbo...fd's still on my horizon tho ....

This is a GOOD THING for those of us with NICE FD Rx7s

Both of my FDs cost me less than any comparable corvette or 911 Porsche. Maybe compared to a 93 DSM or Stealth/3000 the 7 looks high priced, but it is ever so much more car.

BTW asking price is seldom the final price. I have seen "fair to good" condition 7s go for $6-8K. My original automatic was pristine and only had 60K miles on it cost me $7K.

I bought my FD3S becuase it was cheaper to buy than a fast bike. Its a JDM RX7 (R/H drive) which was built in Sep 1992, so its actually a 1992 FD3S in Japan but a 1993 model in the US. After the exchange rate, a 2 year inspection and the Japanese compulsorary inspection, it cost me $6125. It has 61,000KM (36,600 Miles) on the odo and is flawless inside and out. It is also bone stock since I picked it up today but wont be by the end of the weekend. The only negative (not for the traffic in Japan though) is that it is an automatic which actually costs more here.

It'll look and sound sweet after I have the Titanium Apex N1, the Airnix filters and Apex FCU installed. Can't wait

Nice score. I always wondered though about US guys who purchase their FDs in Japan. What happens to the car when they come back to the states. Is there anyway to bring them in or do they have to be sold?

I didn't think I got much of a deal until I read this thread. Same thing goes for all other Japanese cars though.

I've heard of guys bringing back cars as parts or as competition cars. I hear it can get real expensive to license for the street if even possible due to crash tests??

I'll mess with mine and sell it when I leave unless my company sends me to a country where the JDM RX7 is legal like England or Australia. Until then I'll be racing against Skyline GTRs and Sylvias, Celica Supras and Soarers and every other custom built turbo charged Japanese sedan that can't be imported to the states.

Average price on autotrader.com is over $17k. Seems a little higher than when I was shopping last summer.

I bought my 1995 PEP in March of 2000 almost 3 years ago for $24500......it only had 3,065 miles on it!!!!

Its still in brand new shape just with more miles and tons of mods. I've kept all the original stuff so if I ever sell it I can part out the mods and put it back to original or close. I could break even at least with the price of the car then get quite a lot of $ for my mods. Its not bad to drive a car for 3 years for free.

Boy, I guess I won't complain about the price of my FD. I paid 13 for a 93 R1 with 60k original miles and good compression. Just got it 12/26.

Prices

This will make some of you very happy.
I bought my 94 Silver R2 in 1998 for $16,500 with 28kmiles..that makes me very happy!
It was stolen in 2000. Recovered after 6 months in excellent shape (no damage & only an additional 1k miles on odo).
The insurance co had laready settled with me for almost $24K!!!!!
In a word documentation!!! I had articles mentioning the 3rd gen as collectible...etc I sent everything to the insurance company.
...like a true enthusiast I tried to find the exact same car in pristine condition....couldn't do it. Bought the origninal car from the insurance co....at a considerable discount!
Their is nothing else like these cars....

Here is my take. I had a Black Base model 94 at one time. Loved the car. Then I sold it for 1K more than I bought it. I bought a C5 corvette, and sold that to go back to the Rex. I bought a 93 R1 Black with 130K miles on it Blown apex seals and the exterior in good condition, but in need of a paint job. I bought the car for 2K. I put a Reman motor from malloy mazda, original turbos, ACT Clutch, Koyo Radiator, front mount intercooler, Power FC, and Silicone hoses. I now have 8800 in the whole car. I can run low 12's high 11's all day long, and it's my daily driver. Do I want 14K+ for my RX7 yes. Not because I'm greedy, but think about it. What kind of car looks as new as an FD and runs low 12's high 11's for under 20K? Plus in comparison to the C5 I had. The Rex is right up there with it. I'm not going to take away from the C5 though. It's an awesome machine and is very mean off the showroom floor. but I also had to pay 40K for a used one with 16K miles on it.

Maybe I'm just bitter from missing out on a 93 with 40K miles for just 15.5 in 'early 00. Nowadays, R1's with 100K miles are going for a couple grand more. So much for depreciation . Sheesh, an Rx7 is a better investment than the stock market right now.

I know this is weird, but a 1990-1993 viper is a good choice too. You just have to worry about the motor going out every 10K miles.

I'm not going to glip through what others are going to say, so this might sound like a repeat........

It's simple laws of ecomonics:

Supply and Demand

If u don't get it please have someone else explain it or take a course....... then u'll have an understanding of how the world economy might work.......

BTW, how much would a FD with 200,000+ miles and a new engine with new turbos be worth?

and all the good upgrades for both performance and reliablity on there.

Paint is almost perfect.........
