Ok so I fixed all my oil leaks, and my car does not leak one drop of oil anymore. However, I am still finding myself adding oil once a week? When I start the car, there is a little bit of white smoke that comes from the exhaust for a few seconds, then it goes away. Once I start driving, there is no smoke what so ever, even when im boosting.

I estimate im using probably between 2-3 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles. Id like to also mention my driving habits: Once the car is warmed up I like to drive it semi-hard( 1st gear-4th gear 3000-4500RPM shifts) so obviously im not getting good gas mileage because of how I drive. SO... no oil leaks, no smoke coming from exhaust... am I missing something?

 

last rebuild or ever? that's what mine did in the beginning before it got real bad.

 

and even then that sounds a little high, mine smokes like a bitch when it starts up and I don't go through that much, or maybe I do, I'm not sure as I have barely put 4000 miles on it since I bought it a year ago and I change the oil every 1000 miles

was it ever rebuilt?

 

The engine wasn't rebuilt, it was replaced with a Mazda Reman. It was replaced because the previous owner let the first engine overheat, and she drove it like that to the dealer

 

reman, that's probably part of your problem, I'll let someone else chip in at this point, but those have been known to have problems, and you may be looking at a rebuild

 

I think the generally accepted 'normal' oil consumption is about 1 U.S. quart every 2500 miles.
I know that I change my oil between 2500 and 3000 and it is usually down about 1 quart.

 

The same exact thing happens to mine.

When I first start it, there is white smoke but not enough for me to be alarmed.

Then I make sure to drive gently to let her warm up.

Eventually the white smoke dissappears.

Another reason this happens is that since this car is not a daily driver and you let her sit for long periods of time. Upon initial start of the engine, the oil will burn causing white smoke.

Consider putting in synthetic oil. If you do not already.

 

white smoke = coolant or maybe a little bit of condensation
blue smoke = oil

 

The white smoke on start up is totally normal, every car does it. Its just condensation, but if its extended, or occurs any other time than on initial start up white smoke is coolant as said above.

 

That's a large amount of oil to be adding.

I will admit I do not drain as much oil as I pour in. Is this how you've determined the 2-3 quarts? If so, I probably come up about a quart less in the drain pan than I pour in.

Or is this the amount of oil you have to add every 3k to keep things on the right range of the dipstick. I never need to add oil because of the dipstick reading.

Unless you have blown turbos or a need to install a catch can for track driving, I would investigate a little more.

 

I have never added oil between changes to compensate for normal consumption. I do change my oil much more frequently than 3000 miles though. Still, yours sounds like abnormally high consumption.

 

If I remember correctly, I bought 2 quarts of oil just before I got my last oil change, and used both bottles of oil. Then again, when I got my last oil change I was also leaking a crap load of oil from the oil pan gasket, OMP O-Rings, Oil Filter pedestal O-Rings, and Oil sending Unit O-Ring.

Since I am no longer leaking any oil at all, what im gonna do is buy 2 quarts of oil, count my mileage with my dipstick full, and wait 1000 miles and see how much oil I had to add. I will report back here with my results
