What's the little red box for?

Ok, there's a red box under the driver's side of the car. I believe its to the left of the tranny. I was wondering what it's for.

It seems to have a bunch of ground wires there as well. Since the wires on mine seems to be pretty torn up, I was wondering what appliances they go to, and if its possible to ground straight to chassis instead of that red box.

Thanks in advance, I wasn't too sure what to search under for this.
