Whats the deal with 5th gear?!!!!
Yea so i was driven up the turnpike on sat. and when I finally had the need to grab 5th all I felt was some grindige. I was confused at first but I remembered someone talking about this but not quite sure where(maybe here) It never did this b4 until now. I was like .I owned about 5 cars with gearboxs and never had any problems. Whats the deal? I most likely need a clutch in about 100miles or so . Still all my other 4 gears grip nice.

The average price to drop our tranny is about $500. Parts additional.
You guessed it. Between a lightweight flywheel, a Hi-per clutch, and the rebuild you are easily looking at a $1500 job.

I did the same thing...2nd to 5th...if you have a warranty, it will cover a 5th gear synchro, then replace your clutch and flywheel at same time for free labor - I did

yup, that job is gonna consist of some deep pockets.
I was thinking too I only did the miss shifts a couple of times. Most likely the prevous owner was molesting the gears b4 i got it. I guess thats the price you pay when buying from private owners that you dont know.

I think mine is shot as well. Sometimes if I go over into "pre" fifth gear, hold it about one second then push it up I won't get the grinding, or it's usually not as painful.

My fifth gear is going too. Doesn't happen all the time but it happens. I just try to throw it in gear as fast as possible cause it only happens when I granny shift. My reverse doesn't grind but it stumbles pretty hard like it's about to stall. It never used to do that.

i dunno double clutching didnt seem to work out for me.
ive learned to just rev match mine, slides right in ever time! :P soon i'll have the time to replace that bastard syncro, but till then i will just rev match. All i do is lets say im in 4th gear @ 4000 RPM, now without slowing down, clutch in, off the gas just a bit, and right when the rpm is at 3000, shift to 5th. so its pretty much 1000 RPM difference between 4th and 5th. just match that and shift.

1500 for a lightweight flywheel, a Hi-per clutch, and the rebuild of a tranny and thats expensive? here in hawaii nearly every shop will charge 1400 for just a clutch!

STEVECOD> i have that same problem! that kills me when im racing and i miss that gear! You know what it is?! its the stupid motor mounts!
here is what i believe happens: when you try to shift@ high speed the engine jerks to the left along with your tranny and third gear is no longer where you think it is.
look on the left side of the engine, under the hood. there is a shield that protects the ABS, if that shield is making contact with that pipe that runs from the turbos to the intercooler, then its gotta be the motor mounts. also listen for a thud/knock/bump sound when you back up and go foward again (its your loose motor jerking around) or after a hard stop, you may hear a thud when you take off. im planning on replacing those motor mounts with something tougher. another cure for this is an engine torque brace and ive also seen a JDM transmission brace. im sure you may be able to fabricate your own as i will cause they are wayyy over priced. do a search on these and you will see.

This seems like a common problem so I am willing to try what works until my pockets grow fatter..thanks
