What's better? Replacing the AST or just bypassing it?

What's better? Replacing the AST or just bypassing it?
I've been registered for a while now and I'm about to buy a 3rd gen rx7 as a project car. I'm selling my 2000 Celica to get one. 
My goal is to put $20,000 into rebuilding one... not spending 20 grand just to buy one. But looking at my list of parts to replace, upgrade or fix, I ran across something I don't see the need for.
What is the point of a AST? I know that they're failure prone and need to be replaced. I just don't see the need in spending $150 to replace something that you can just bypass for $60 using M2's kit.
Is it best to get a replacement or should I just cut a weak link in the chain out?
