What would you do?
Remember the thread "Unfortunate RX7 buyer" ... well I got the issurance estimate to fix the car from the crash I had with it ...
So Gieco says the repairs will cost $11,925 to repair the car. I will post pics later today when I can, but the front left is fairly heavily damaged and the front left shock tower post under the hood is about 1 inch back (rear) farther than where it should be, aligned with the opposite right front stock tower post (where the cross bar goes).
Geico offered me a check for $13,625 and no car. They also offered me a check for $10, 625 AND the car .. which cost $11,925 to repair ... until the repair costs go up higher while the repairs are being made. When was the last time a repair estimate was higher than what you actually ended up paying??
I paid $6,500 for the car, $5,000 on a loan, the rest cash. The mazda shop here in town MIGHT be able to give me a lower estimate, BUT, this is the same guy who quoted me 10K for an engine rebuild.
Now, the car is going to need another $6K worth of engine and other reliability upgrades AFTER the car is repaired to PRE-crash status.
My total bill MINIMUM will be to get the car drivable again (albeit new engine and rebuilt turbos) is about 18K. Mind you, I still have the loan on the car for $5k at 7.5% / $165 mo.
So, what would you do?
I want my FD

A very decent FD could be bought for $13-$15k. For $18k you could have a stunning FD.

I would also take the $13,625 even though it sucks to see another FD go to the graveyard. However you can get a very decent FD for around the $13k as moconnor stated and really repairing the damaged FD is gonna be more of a hassle then anything.

The mazda shop owner here in town has a NEW frame that could fix the car even with the shock tower moved .. at least thats what I'm told.
Someone also suggested parting the car out for sale, however, I have no garage or tools to work on this car.
Should I just let it sit in my carport, buy $100 in tools and take it apart since I dont have to worry about how to put it back together? Some people probably have....
Thanks for the input all, I appreciate it

^Thats probably the best plan. Buy it, buy some tools and just take everything apart. You'll definitely get a good amount of money from parting everything out and just keep whatever you feel you need for another FD.

Post some pics or send them to u_a_t_209@yahoo.com. If you decide to take the 13k and buy a new car. Take the 10k and the car and I will give you 3k for the car so that you get a new car that hasent been wrecked or salvaged and I can use the parts to fix up other FD's. Send me a PM.

Total the car, take the money and buy an FC (turbo if you can find one that's in good shape).
There's no shame in knowing your limits, and an honorable person will admit when they're in over their head. You did neither, and wrecked a damned good car. There's no sense in repeating the same mistake twice.
Learn to drive the FC well, on a racetrack where it's safe. You'll be saving money and improving your skills by driving a well-balanced but lower-powered car, which forces you to improve your technique if you want to go fast. FC's are cheaper to maintain and upgrade, so spend the money you save on performance driving books and schools.
If you really love FD's, I suggest you buy the wrecked chassis from the insurance company (let them total it, but ask if you can buy the wrecked chassis), and sell it to rx7what who can salvage it effectively.
Good luck,

Have I got this right
You bought the car for 6500 and now you have the chance to sell it back to the insurance company or keep it and come out with cash in your pocket.
I like the keep the car and the cash and sell off the parts or the car whole and save your money

i would take the 13k. whether i had the space or not i would not want a totaled car collecting dust, then pay off the 5 k loan, put 8k down on another fd and get lupe's car. hehe
you could take the car plus cash and sell the car and still have just abput 13...
or take the car and the cash and about a year(if you're lucky) later have 15-16 k
just my .02
