Don't you have to run an aftermarket ECU (and tune) with the BNR's ?

Aren't the Spec '99 turbos a direct swap, both mechanically, and with the stock ECU ?

If you read his list:

"new pfc and tune"

And the BNRs are a direct bolt up, well... 90% direct.

No, you do not require an aftermarket ECU in order to run BNRs. They perform the exact same at stock boost levels as the stock HT12's. At least they did in my case. At stock levels, the only noticeable difference between the BNRs and stockers is the fact that the wastegate on the BNRs has already been ported out.

Bryan could shed more light on this subject, but I believe they are pretty much the same when running at stock lvls.

Unhappy

I just spent $14k You dont think about it untill you add it up. This is with in the last 2 months since my car has been at PFS.

Apexi AVCR
Greddy Boost guage
Supra TT fuel pump
Brand new engine from Malloy
PFS tearing down the new engine for atkins cryo'ed seals, large street port, and balancing.
Single turbo kit with Borg warner turbo
1600 secondary injectors with rail regulator and fuel lines ect.
FMIC
HKS Twin Power
Aluminum Radiator
And labor

Already had
Apexi PFC
New harnesses
New vaccum lines
Act flywheel
Spec clutch
Rebuilt trans

Now i can sell all my twin turbo stuff to get some money back

Go single and save yourself the headache. Go with the new engine since you wont have to worry about used parts. And get bigger injectors and meth to be safe. Also think about cooling and ignition. Do it all at once and be done with it. I have learned the hard way with my first rebuild since i waited to get a better intercooler and ended up helping my 3000mile rebuild blow(also timing issues).

I didn't consider the BNR's because of durability issues in the past. It may be that they have corrected whatever the problem was. I bought the 99 j-spec turbos new, and they were about market price.

Thanks for the post! I already have most of the bolt-ons. All I would need is the fuel system and meth. What borg warner did you go with? how does it compare to the gt35r? I've been seeing Borg Warner mentioned more and more but I know nothing about them.

As far as cooling. I have a smallish greddy SMIC, but I figure with a "HD AI" spraying 20% meth that my temps won't be a problem. I already have metal radiator and dual oil coolers.

What was the cost of tear-down, atkins seals, porting, and balancing? Did you have them do any other mods like oil passage or anything?

Thanks,
Ian

just go to the classified section and get that greddy t78 turbo kit thats been for sale for a while, its dirt cheap, then slap that on a streetported engine. and I just scored a used snow performance AI kit for 250, with progressive injection controlled by boost, not quite the level of HD AI that has been being discussed by Gordon, but still better than the normal fixed amount injection systems.

It doesn't seem that cheap when I can pick up a new gt35r BB kit from rx7store for $2300.

depend on what your RX is worth to you..
if you dump 10k into it you will never get it back, if you did all that and decided to sell it you will not even get half of it back. if you plan on keeping and enjoy in it and can accept the fact that you will be a financal lose then do it. if you dont want to lose to much, sell your car, buy one with a good build already and move on from there.

It was like $3200 for them to take it out, port it, seals(they were able to reuse alot of the seals since the engine was brand new cut alot of the cost), and have it balanced, and to put it back in but that is just the engine build not all the other stuff they are doing around the engine. Not too sure if he did any of those mods but really are not needed since it is not all out race build and he would have reccomended it if it were the case. Not too sure which borg warner since i have not got too much info about it(let Ray pick one for my HP goal) and he said it flows 65lbs per minute and will get me around 400rwhp on pump with no problem and 500rwhp on race gas. I want my car to be very driveable but definitly track worthly and want the turbo to spool quick.
