Some poeple don't bother reading. They are known as newbies.

1 oz premix/gallon is a high ratio that isn't needed except for racing. Pettit recommends 4 oz/tank. I usually put in about 6oz/tank.

Wsup all. Just a simple question about something I heard and wanted some clarification. Is using the best gas (race fuel) all the time cause any retardation in the engine timing? Thanks for clearing this up in advance, just wanted to separate fact from fiction.

Not on the 3rd-gen RX-7. Timing is set by the ECU, it does not compensate successfully for the type of fuel you put in the car.

On some newer (OBD-II) cars I have heard reports that the ECU will "learn" based on the feedback of the knock/O2 sensors and retard timing if you put in low octane fuel, but in this case, it would be a timing advance, not a timing retard if you go to the "best gas".

edit: clarified how sh*tty the stock ECU is while dealing with knock.

Any 93 octane from a name brand, high volume station. 8oz of synthetic 2 stroke oil added on race weekends.

76 gas station on the corner of Almaden Expressway and Foxworthy in San Jose has 100 unleaded. Last time I was there (a week ago) it was $4.69/gal I think.

Any brand (except Texaco) over 91 O. I'm very surprised to learn that some folks use mid-grade 89.

thanks jumprdude. what do you think of the heightened performance if any compared to 91 octane. What do you think of the cost/benefit value for 100 octane. Thanks again.

94 here in canada (cheveron or Petro Canada) with 4 OZ of 2 stroke oil every second fillup.

I have 20 gallon drum of 116 race fuel. I throw a few gallons in when I go autoxing or trackdays.

Never use shell.

On an FD there is no performance increase unless you tune for that increase. Higher octane allows you to run a higher A/F ratio - hence more boost. It also allows you to advance timing more. So, just dropping 100 octane into the tank on an FD does nothing, except give you more of a safety margin.

I would not recommend running 100 octane on the street unless you are worried about your car being out-of-tune enough to need the extra safety margin. Also it is not ultimately useful unless you have an ECU that allows you to swap maps quickly so you can alternate between running maps that are safe with pump gas, and maps that have been optimized for race gas. Or you could run race gas all the time but that gets expensive very quickly.

Buy 93 octane on whatever day it is on sale here at Texaco, Shell, or Exxon. Usually Tues, Wed, or Thurs it is 7-9c/gal off. Then get a Shell or Chase Freedom credit card which gives you 3-5% off of your gas purchases...

The 100 octane number you see for Japan and other countries is not measured the same way we measure it. They use RON which is the lab measure, we use RON+Measured at the pump/2 to get an average of lab and real world octane.

Search in a few months for the names of the people using 89 octane, those will be the ones posting: "I think a blew my motor, WTF?"

Manual states 91 for a stock car, if your running a modified car, get the highest octane possible. Specific brand is probably less important, but stay with the majors.
