what are these ***** for? are they functional?

 

Those are air filters I believe.

 

They aren't filters, they are just stoppers so it doesn't create a vacuum leak on the unused port.

 

speaking of *****.

I dont have a picture, but I would like to know what the one on the turbo control solenoid above the ACV is. anyone know? might not be a ****, but I would like to know for sure.

The one on the turbo control vacuum solenoid is a plastic cover. When the solenoid is off, the nipple closest to the body of the solenoid vents to it. I think it's a type of air baffle without a filter element.



The little '*****' on the others are indeed air filters, they pass air in/out and prevent dust from getting lodged in the system. I have to suspect they're very important since dust can prevent the solenoid seals from working.
