what are the symptoms of coil packs failing?

the car seems to drive fine in daily driving.

however, the other day it was really hot outside. after some short trips, the car started having trouble starting.

the starter was cranking, but the car did not start for a few seconds. you could hear the starter slow down some before the engine ignited.

could the battery or spark plugs cause this? or only the coil packs?

Get a volt meter and a mazda manual and test them. If they are out of spec replace them.

might be the battery. although, not a rx-7, my wrx started to have a hard time starting up. i thought it was the spark plugs and ruled out the battery since all my electronics/lights still worked, and it can keep on cranking for minutes (slow, sometimes fast). one day, it wouldn't start up anymore, just kept on cranking. again, thinking it wasn't the batteries, i brought it to the mechanics to have it checked out. ended up just being the battery getting old, and didn't have enough juice to get the engine started. it had juice tho, enough energy to keep the lights/electronics on and to keep cranking. just not enough to start the engine anymore.

The Rx7 is equipped with a hot start mode as its clear the factory anticipated a condition which could cause this. If you have the original vacuum layout still intact there is a solenoid set up to address that via the fuel pressure regulator. I don't know if this is your problem or if that sup-system is working, however its unlikely a secondary ignition problem as that (a flat coil ) would show up with a cold engine first. These engines are blast furnaces and a hot engine will boil the fuel in the rails. The fuel system needs to stay pressurized through the heat soak period to help keep the fuel from vaporizing which can cause vapor lock. If the check valve in the fuel pump is skewed your fuel will vaporize and make it hard starting hot. Just some things to think about when trouble shooting a hot start condition. On the bright side YOU OWN AN RX7 John

my t2 coil just blew the other day. symptons are poor idle, doesnt feel as powerful, and for me my turbo timer doesnt like to keep the car running. for some reason i blow coils left and right, but its due to wiring. i moved my coils to the fender and had to redue my wiring. after this blow i fixed the last weak link, so i should be good to go. hope this helps
