What are the Real specs of the Spirit R
Ok, it’s 6 years since this car was sold, they exist member of this forum and our friends in Japan and Australia has some. So what are the real specifications? I am in Japan for a few hour layover and pulled this up on a wed search.. 330 Hp ???
"The last 1500 Rx7's ever built were a special run of sports versions and inherited the name "Spirit R". From the Sirit of the Japanese ZERO fighter plane. These cars received the same colour silver skin that adorned the battle planes.
These cars are among the ultimate showroom versions produced with a multiude of changes that would hardly warrant the development costs. Most of the changes are similar to the 2000 Rz which was a formidable machine indeed. Type-A versions are close to this spec, with the red Recaros returning and the yellow Bilstein shocks. Brakes are further enhanced with special calipers and this version gets drilled rotors with stainless lines as well which are hidden behind newly designed BBS 17" alloys.
The Spirit-R, unlike the Rz, gets newly re-design turbo's with faster spooing turbine wheels and a few other minor tweaks that really can't be seen, but can definately be felt. A Japanese review altered the on-paper power figure from 280ps to a staggering real-life 330ps.
Interior gets white dials and grey leather accents stitched in red. A soft grey covering is placed on the plastic dash pieces for a more modern look. The performance oriented Type A is supplemented by the lesser spec Type B which has 10kg heavier, red, authentic, leather bucket seats and an automatic version in the Type C.
However, we are glad they went ahead with the Spirit R, because it simply raises the Fd to become one of the ultimate road machines of all time. So the FD-3S came to an end of production in August 2002.
Thats it. All over......
I dont think so. 4 years later the demand is still so high that Type A's are still on sale for the same price. 4,000,000yen! It proves the Rx8 cant fill the gaping hole in mazda's line-up left by the awesome Fd Rx-7."

a lot. xD
importing a car is expensive as hell... that of course depending on where you live.
Strictly Speaking, the Spirit R was divided into three groups, The Type A, Type B and Type C, the Type A was a 2 Seat Manual Gearbox version, the Type B was a 2 + 2 manual gearbox version and the Type C was a 2 + 2 with an automatic gearbox.
The Spirit R's combined all the optional extra's that had been offered in the Series 8 FD's. Only 1500 were made, 500 of each of the different Types and still get HUGE prices tacked on to them even now.
as for 330 horsepower, maybe, but the Gentlemans Agreement meant that the Japanese couldnt make cars over 274 Hp (204Kw). That said, few cars actually made their claimed horsepower numbers. So most likely all Series 8 FD's made into the 300 mark for horsepower. The Nissan Skyline was found to make somewhere in the neighborhood of 320BHP when dynoed, likewise the Mark IV Supra made over 300 horsepower. So, we'll never really know without ACTUALLY testing an Series 8 Spirit R.

The Spirit R and the RZ have the same turbos.
The Spirit R dash has silver dials (not white) with a Spirit R logo on the tacho, the RZ has white dials. Both cars have the red stitching, but the leather is black in an RZ.

A lot of other people also believe that Mazda made 500 of each, but I'm willing to bet a few quid that that isn't true. People have jumped to the conclusion that there are 500 of each because it's a known fact that all 1500 are numbered and they made three types.
I've emailed Mazda Japan twice asking them to clarify the build number/type breakdown, but they've declined to answer.
It's my belief that there were 1000 or more Type "A"s (the more desirable car), and I doubt they would have made more than 100 Type "C" automatics.

We are talking about the last run of an iconic Japanese sports car. The previous special edition (the 2000-2001 RZ) were ALL 5spd manuals.
Mazda threw in a few auto Spirit R's as a sop to the odd fat Japanese businessman.
