At what point does coolant temp become critical?

I am adding a water temp gauge soon and am going to use a sender with a warning capability. Basically it will drive the temp gauge and also activate a light or buzzer if the temp gets to a predetermined point. Which one of the choices below should I use? Keep in mind I will have the gauge to watch, the additional warning will truly be an "Oh ****" light: As in unless damage is eminent I don't want it going off.

230 F
217 F
205 F
195 F

Thanks.

230F is what i would choose. Depends on mixture. And it's basically when the stock gauge starts to move, and i think that's around 230F that you want to start going..oh shiet....i have to pull over and open the hood!

Max Temp.

I've yet to see over 210 degrees, even out at the track, so 217 would be a good choice I think.

217Fis too low.

The stock rad fan set-up will come on at 227F so if you have the stock setup (like MOST people do) then you can see temps of 230 pretty easily by just idling the car even with an upgraded radiator. Upgraded rads don't change engine temps while not moving, the fans pretty much control the engine temp under stop and go conditions.

I'd set it at 235For so to eliminate false alarms.

If you run with the parking lights on or the interior fans on 3 or higher then the fans come on at 207F.

What temps do people routinely see? I think 230 as well is where I want the "For chrise sake shut down the motor" warning to go off.

Since some of us are used to reading in Celsius because of the PFC. I wouldn't worry until 230. Even then it wouldn't be a nervous break down, just stop and let the car cool down. No biggie.

I agree, 230. Stock fans come on at low at 221F, medium at 226F. The "oh ****" point is when the coolant starts to boil in localized points. If you're running a 50/50 mix, you should be fine in that respect at 230, just don't go higher.

consistant abuse at over 212 will cause damage to the seals that will add up.

keep it under a 100

ive lost two motors...one set of side seals due to heat...and a set of o rings due to heat

dont pay any attention to the stock guage...it sucks
get a decent temp guage.
