could using a lighter weight of oil like 5/30 or 10/30 cause oil to spil by the oil control rings and smoke?

Nonsynthetic oil is just fine as long as you change it often enough. I change mine every 2k .

In the context of what, a high mileage engine, low mileage, average mileage? Synthetic or regular? I use Castrol GTX 10W/30 and have absolutely zero issues with it.

No, Mazda recommends the use of 5/30 or 10/30 for the car. IMO, 20/50 should only be used in hot climates and should not be used in colder conditions.
