STOP DRIVING IT!!!!!

I'm sure it could be many things but ALWAYS be on the safe side. Get a compression test done.

A few signs would be:

1. Hard to start the car (especially hot starts)
2. Vacuum is 10 inHg or less
3. Engine shakes like a paint shaker

Stock cat-back? Still running a cat? Apex seals wouldn't make it past those, methinks..

Usually if you lose an apex seal and ergo compression, the engine is going to lope at idle--flub, flub--flub, flub--flub,flub--flub,flub. If you are not experiencing that problem, then you need to find the source of the metal shavings before they find their way into the engine. Turbos? Someone was careless in grinding on some part (turbos, engine porting) or some flange on the exhaust? It would seem unlikely that metal shavings would make it out the exhaust if the source was ahead of the pre-cat, main cat and the muffler baffeling.

Can't say exactly from what, but metal shavings are definitely not an apex seal.

Exactly. Take off your map sensor hose and that will feel like a blown apex seal.

Right, but we weren't trying to figure out what could cause the car to act like it had a blown apex seal, we were trying to figure out what would cause metal shaving to be spewing forth from the exhuast.

my only guess would be the cat breaking up, or his turbine wheel eating the turbo housing

That's what I think as well. Either way, don't drive the car (For safety's sake) until you figure out what's going on!
