What have ya'll pd to install a long block?

I'd like to get some data points for this as my FD is in the shop at the moment getting the long-block dropped in... I have a feeling this is taking longer (and thus bill is getting larger) than it should. Little more detail... engine in complete, turbos, intakes, vaccume hoses, accessories, etc.

thanks!

Thanx for the replies... I'm actually looking for how many hours, rather than days, shops have charged just to drop in a complete long-block. I was guessing no more than 8 to drop it in the cradle, bolt-up the tranny, engine mounts, route and connect harness to the ecu, connect ps lines, oil cooler lines, rad, misc connectors, top fluids, and get the thing running. Does this sound about right???

Mazda book rate on a complete motor R&R (remove and reinstall) is 22 hours. This includes pulling out the motor, tearing it down to the shortblock, building up another shortblock, and reinstalling in the car. Note that this is for a stock car, and does not include cracking open the block or any internal motor work at all.

I will tell you that about 6 years ago I removed my own motor and sent it off to be rebuilt. I then flatbedded my FD (with an empty engine bay) to a reputable rotary shop to take delivery of the motor and get her running. Back then, they charged me $1200 just for labor. Even though I had pulled the motor myself, I had made a mess of it and they charged extra because of that. Shops like to be given a 'virgin' job to start and finish, and don't like dealing with other people's halfbaked efforts.

Btw, not saying this is the case with you, just fyi .

Rich, thanks for the book-rate info. This is certainly helpful, as is your history of cost for R&R. Again, in my case, the block is largely in the same condition as it was when removed (except that I attached the p/s & a/c housing w/o routing the oil cooler line behind it first - doh!). All hardware grouped/binned & labeled, so forth.

Assuming the thing starts ... it looks like the shop's gonna charge ~13hrs. This includes adding an EGT bung, swapping my rad (Mazda Comp rad soon fs!!) and hooking-up my PLX a/f setup (just a/f & egt - I'm taking care of the other stuff).

Still seems a touch high ... but not out of line...

I just had my shortblock replaced. It was 1000$ for the labor. And it took 2 days.

Under "Engine Options" he charges $1000, but that's to "Remove and Replace" over the rebuild. Not sure if halving that would be accurate for just the install, but maybe it helps.

thanks!

maybe u can let them know to charge you per-project basis. so by doing this they'll not screw you over for some extra hours of works.

For my corvette sting-ray. I have them to install a super charger kit and they only charge me $600. Took me a month to go and pick it up as they're busy.
