Thumbs up

Looking good, guys. Remember, when working on the FD, *nothing* is ever easy (at least not the first time you do it )

I have done a lot of this before, but it was a lot easier when the engine was out!

Well I almost have her back together. Just need to throw in the intake and other associated lines, the intake itself, the UIM, and bolt down the oil filler neck and the vacuum tank. I'll post some more pics later this evening.

Okay a couple of more pics. This first one is a picture of Gotham's pullies. See how nice and shiny they are. I had a small fitment problem with the water pump pulley. I was still using the POS mazda "spring" type clamp and it would hit the side of the pulley when I tried to slide it up the radiator hose. A phone call to Gotham's excellent customer service department and a quick trip to go pick a worm drive clamp from Lowe's quickly rectified that issue.

Here is a shot with the coils installed. One evening this past week I took a little while to clean up the vacuum lines.

Here is a picture of the UIM and one of Carson's block off plates that he makes:

And another pic of the other 2 BOPs installed on the UIM:

I also got the turbos and the Downpipe installed one evening this past week.

I had developed a small coolant leak at the smae time as the exhaust leak. I could not tell if it was the top of the lower radiator or the heater so I installed new lower radiator and heater hoses.

Yesterday I got the turbo heat shields, Y-pipe, secondary turbo inlet pipe and the primary turbo inlet pipes installed:

I didn't have a whole lot of time to work on the car today, but I did get some more parts out of the basement and on to the car.

And one more shot from the other side. I installed the oil filler neck. I saved the bolt on the bottom of it though for Carson. He really loves to do hand yoga so I saved this one for him.

You can still see I have a little bit more work to do. I still need to attach the fuel lines and the spark plug wires, install the UIM and throttle body, throttle cable, intake elbow, crossover tube, and the undertray. Hopefully tomorrow we'll fire it up!

The first one covers the hole that is left from removing the double throttle butterflies. The second two are from the AWS "actuator" and the pipe that leads over to the intake elbow.

Well Carson and I got eveything back together on Monday and we fired it up. Carson worked his magic with the datalogit and we went out for a drive. Got about 1/2 mile down the road and had to turn around for a boost leak. I forgot to tighten a clamp so I took care of that issue and back off we went. Still had a small boost leak but I was still making 10
PSI so we decide to go ahead and go WOT to make sure everything alse was OK. We get on a stretch of road that conducive for a 3rd gear WOT pull. Boost is up to 10 then 5 and the transition then zero. ARRRGH. It is making some sort of vacuum cleaner noise and will now make no boost at all. Long story short, since we eliminated the ACV we had to relocate the turbo control solenoid. In doing so we got the two vac lines switched. So I fixed that, but I still have the small boost leak. I found it yesterday and I will fix it this afternoon. So everything should be good. Now just waiting on the Gotham resonated midpipe, and I will be done. For a few months anyway!

Wow, nice write-up and pics. All that work and you're only tuning for 10 psi? Why not more?

First thing you learn when working under the hood of this car is to not drop ANYTHING.

If you're lucky you drop something and it falls in the bellypan so all you have to do is drop the pan to retrieve it. If you're unlucky you drop something and it doesn't reach the bellypan. In that case you crane your neck every which way hoping to catch sight of what you dropped. If you do catch sight of it you won't be able to reach it with bare hands. When you go in and try to retrieve it with long pliers or a screwdriver you may get it or you may knock it into the bellypan or into the fan shroud of the radiator Odds are 50-50 in those cases If you're really unlucky you'll drop something and it will somehow make it through the solenoid rack onto the top of the motor and then fall down in between the LIM and the block. In those cases, hope you got a spare

...when stripping my old motor I found all sorts of little nuts and bolts between the LIM gasket and the block First time I put plug wires on the car after buying it I found 2 oil caps laying near the coils. At least somebody was adding oil on occasion

No new tires yet. Appalachian's in shop compressor is broke so they can't mount tires in house. I'll have to wait until next week to pick up the new hoosiers. Yeah next up is intercooler and catback.

I need to take a pic of my "special" tools. One trick I taught myself to do is to put a piece of shop towel over a nut or bolt and then put the socket on it. This locks it onto the socket and then it is a lot easier to handle and you are less likely to drop it. When you have the nut or bolt started you can use your long needle nose pliers to retrive the peice of towel.

I also use dabs of grease or magnetize my sockets.
