It's not. I always just push start mine, easier on the starter that way.

I always start it in 1st gear. The AWS is still functioning as it revs from 1500 to 2000 RPM, just not 3000 like it does when you start in nuetral. Imediately after starting, I take it out of first and put it in nuetral so I'm not holding the clutch in.
