EGT's

Since some of you guys have EGT guages, what temps levels are relevant to the FD motor?

What temp is optimum, safe, dangerous? Do you guys use it for tuning timing?

As far as recommended gauges, it really depends on what you are doing with your car. If you only drive your car on the street you should have the following:

1. Boost/Vacuum gauge
2. Aftermarket Water Temp or linearize the stock temp gauge

That's all you really need for normal driving. If do open track racing/driving or other driving events, you might benefit from a few other gauges. However, it all depends on what you do.
wouldnt an a/f gauge be useful to monitor boost creep and spikes? such as during the winter time, or after adding a mod? i know a boost gauge is used for this as well, but running lean is a big killer of rotarys, and was thinking it would be an important gauge. i ask b/c i was thinking of getting 1, but if its not gonna serve a purpose ill keep my cash.

An A/F will help, IF IT USES a wideband sensor. The stock sensor won't kick in until it's too late.

The stock o2 sensor is a typical narrowband sensor. It is designed for the car to maintain a 14.7 AFR in cruising conditions to bolster fuel economy and reduce emissions. That is all it is good for. The sensor will NOT produce a linear voltage as you give the car more throttle. This is precisely why the stock ecu relies on fuel maps after a certain throttle opening.

So yes, any A/F gauge that relies on the stock o2 sensor is worthless other than for a light show.

IMO, there is no need to be monitoring A/F ratios until you have significantly modded the car, at which point you will have a standalone ecu that has been tuned by a tuner using a wideband (or tuned by the car owner with a wideband).

I just have the boost and water temp. Both of mine are greddy and work very well. For daily driving those 2 are a good start I would say.

Unfortunately, where the sensor is located plays a huge roll as to what your temps will be. Even a few inches on the DP could cause a few hundred degrees of difference on two different cars. There are some old threads in the "Rotary Performance" section on EGT sensor locations. It's one of those things that each location has it's advantages and disadvantages, no clear cut winner.

That being said, the EGT is pretty much useless. I just use it to see how hard my car is being pushed on the track. The gauge almost gets buried on the track. I don't let it go too far.

Check this link about vacuum readings:

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/boost_test.html

Keep in mind that vacuum readings change as rpms change. In other words, if your car idles at 1000 rpms, it will have a different vacuum reading than if it was idling at 750 rpms.

Water temp, oil temp, boost, A/F. The stock water temp guage is useless.

i have boost, a/f

but i have a question, people are saying that if you get a pfc, you dont need a water temp gauge, oil temp etc?

cause my next mod will soon be water temp, and oil pressure gauges, then the pfc, does that make sense?

ps. sorry for bringing back an old thread

You don't need a water temp gauge with the PFC, but the PFC doesn't show oil temp. I wouldn't bother with an oil pressure gauge, the stock one works just fine if the sender is in good working order.

hmm, then i should just eliminate getting a water temp gauge cause in the next month, im getting a pfc.. but my stock oil pressure gauge is off for sure cause its at 0 pretty much all the time..i could just fix the stock one but i rather have an aftermarket gauge

i guess i'll just get the oil pressure gauge now

thanks alot

i'd really like to get a wideband setup with a small digital display out of the way for safety.. and have that and the pfc hooked up to a small laptop that i can take out when i dont' need it
