Series 7 (1996–1998) included minor changes to the car. Updates included a simplified vacuum routing manifold and a 16-bit ECU allowing for increased boost which netted an extra 10 hp (7 kW).
Here we go, grabbed this from wikki for the S7 in the US as proof they slightly boosted for more power. The JDM performance models from 1995 onwards got slight increased boost! I was told Mazda probably boosted slightly more for the S8 performance models to allow for the power increase to 276hp from 255.

think ppl were confused when u said r2 had upped boost bc we were thinking of USDM r2 which is 94 and 95, and those didn't have the power increase u're talking about. but yeah.. 1996 in japan, thats when the efini pipe was introduced and other things probably helped with airflow --> "increased boost". then s8 or whatever its called had the new turbos

i was more confused about the aluminum door claim, and the autos not having tranny oil cooler

Wouldnt have a clue about those, my doors a just the normal.
