I was just looking at these pictuers of rx-7s, and there was this guy with an rx-7 base model sayin he had r1 lips and r1 spoiler, then i looked at a base model with no mods and it looked exactly the same, someone explain this to me please.

Write everything down so you won't forget anything next time you answer one of these questions

no hood? wrecked or what? a dead giveaway are the leather seats that the touring models came with. but the R1's had cloth seats.
all in all both great cars no difference under the hood other than dual oil coolers on the R1, which can be added to the touring model if wanted. suspension was stiffer on the R1 but that was 10 yrs ago so whether you buy an R1 or Touring it's time to change the suspension anyway so what's the difference. i like the touring myself because it's alittle more confortable and it has cruise control and not all touring models have sunroofs or rearwindshield wipers.
hope this helps

The sunroof is the most obvious for a touring. The front lip is most obvious for the R1. Aside from those, the rear spoiler is also a dead giveaway. Many people don't know where to look for the 2nd oil cooler, so I won't immediately use that as an option. Interior is also a giveaway.

hmm..yea seems like maybe the second one is not an r1 or else it got a lot of stuff replaced, seats and rear hatch. plus you said it has no hood? wtf...who's selling it...if it's local i can go check it out with you...i wouldn't mind checking out the other r1.

Then, what the hell do I have? I always thought that I had a 93 base! It has only 1 oil cooler, leather seats, no bose stereo, no sun roof,no rear wiper, but it does have the factory wing, oh yeah no lip either.
So do I just have a base and who ever bought the car new ordered it with a wing or what?

Check directly underneath the passenger headlight, below the clear parking light. On the R1 & R2 it will have the 2nd oil cooler there (matches the one on the drivers side). If it is an automatic, there will be a transmision cooler there instead (no auto R1's). Otherwise there will be empty space if the plastic cover was removed. I beleive the serial number can tell you also, but can't remember for sure.
A rear wing could have been added at any time, not just at purchase as well as the strut bar. Leather seats could have been optional as well. A base model would be the lowest value (exluding modifications). A base Auto' being the least wanted.

Maybe the car is imported from Japan, Europe, Canada or something??
My Euro-spec FD has:
-Sunroof
-Leather seats
-Cruise control
-R1 Front lip with brake ducts
-Dual oil-coolers
-Rear wing
-Strut brace
-Rear wiper
-R1 suspension
-No bose stereo

^ Imported from Japan, highly unlikely. That can be deciphered by the serial number anyhow. It sounds like Tomco78 has un upgraded base though.
All R1 accessories were available as options but touring options on the R1 defeats it's purpose of shaving weight. The touring was a package of options that saved you money as apposed to adding them seperately like you would do on a base model. It is possible to have added all R1 options on a Touring model (almost bought one like that) but if you added all those to a R1, then it would no longer be a R1 but a Touring model instead.

No, mine is not an upgrade. It's an original EURO-SPEC FD!
My point is that the Base, Touring and R1 are US models.
In Europe (and probably in Japan) we have other model designations. Different equipement for different parts of the world.
