Talking What does the stock tranny top out at?

I went 165 yesterday and the car felt kinda hesitant. My car is still pretty stock so I wouldnt except to top it off, but I was wondering what the top speed that the tranny limits out at. The speedomiter says 180 so I thought maybe around their, but hope someone could fill me in.

with a stock rear end and with out the ecu limiter , a 3rd gen with the power to pull it through the air should reach 172mph. I think this is correct,The next question should be ,how much power are we talking about .And how do you go over 158 or159 mph with a stock ECU??

From just a gearing perspective for a stock 5spd/4.1 final, 8000rpm in fifth corresponds to ~195mph. You've got another couple hundred rpm after that before fuel cut kicks in so you could get to 200mph+ just on gearing.

172mph for a stock car is a bit optimistic. From tests, typical stock 93-95 3rd gens have been measured from 158mph-165mph depending upon configuration.

a stock car I think is limited to 158 or159 by the ecu .A high output motor would be needed to go 172 which I thought was the max .I must have done the math incorrectly and read the ecu limit incorrectly in the factory book , sorry

i've nailed 161-ish in my FD. ive only got a DP as a "performance" mod (for now). stock ecu, stock gears, etc. Didn't have any problems at all. The car didnt want to go any faster (more like i pissed my pants) so i backed off and threw her into nuetral and coasted back to 75, and put her back into 5th and cruised the rest of the highway.

Id say 150-160 is not impossible in an FD, unless your motor/turbo's are going.

Actually, the ECU does not have a limiter. The top speed was determined by the coeff of drag of the car vs. hp. at around 160mph, it takes about 170ish rwhp to overcome the wind drag. At 190mph, it takes about 360-370rwhp to overcome the drag...... This is assuming you have a coeff of drag of .31 I think

If I remembered correctly, I did a dyno top speed run a few years ago and the car went 195mph@7500rpm, I think at 8000rpm it'll reach 205mph if you have the hp to make it there...

The stock tranny will hit redline at about 200 mph.

In reality, a stock 3rd gen will run out of power way before that; maybe around 165 mph with enough road and time on the pedal.

I've got 395 hp at the wheels, so in theory I could hit about 200 mph, but that is pretty psycho. I don't think I will ever need to go 200 except for some sort of macho bragging rights.

I'm getting a 0.806 5th gear from the "Bathurst RX-7" they sell in Japan to replace the lame 0.719 5th that comes on US model 3rd gens. This will drop my top speed to about 178 mph, but who cares?

5th just blows goats, so I'm trying to improve it I will be pissed if I'm in a race with a high end car with a 6 speed and we're even up to the top of my 4th gear and then I shift into that crappy 5th, and he walks by me at like 150+ because he's got a usable 5th. (Since his sucky gear would be 6th). Not that I've ever gotten into a race that went up past 4th, but still. If we're still even, and he gets the win because I hit redline at 178, fine with me. He's obviously nuts anyhow. I don't think I'd be taking my car up to 178 in a race with some moron I don't know!

I saw an indicated 170 mph on the stock ecu (dp, cb, intake) way back in early 2000....
