What could cause reduced boost from primary turbo?

The secondary kicks in just fine and feels like normal. The primary boost just doesn't build enough and as I go past 3-4k rpm, there's a sudden burst of power from the secondary. Usually, the transition is relatively smooth since the primary is generating more power.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions - Tom

boost leak (check the coupler on the y-pipe if you still have the stock plastic one) or your precontrol actuator is opening too much/early.

Thanks, I'll check the coupler. Also what does the pre-control actuator do?

Besides the boost leak from the hoses, solinoids, pre-control actuator could also be the problem you have. Check the rod, make sure its not loose. It controls the boost level of the primary turbine. By placing a manual boost controller on the pre-con. actuator, you can raise the boost level of the primary.

Does the pre con actuator control the "gate" on the left side of the exhaust manifold (as you look at it)? If so, what position should the gate be in when the engine is off? Also, does this actuator extend or retract (based on the starting position) as it regulates boost? I would think it extends in order to reduce boost (close the gate).

Boost leak was the problem for me twice.
Damn those plastic intercooler hoses.
