What coolant temp gauge + sender are you using ? Looking for reliabilty and value

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a reliable US or Japanese
coolant temp gauge + sender combination ?

Is a mechanical temp gauge better than LCD types ?

I purchased a made in China combo that failed pre install tests, so I guess
I'm prepared to cough up more money for better equipment, given what it's protecting.

I'm also wondering if anyone has mounted a coolant sensor in a tapped
hose extension collar fitting ? It means 2 extra hose clamps.

I guess that placement results in false temp readings until thermostat opens,
same as upper plugged coolant tower threaded fittings,
but are there ever situations where the thermostat fails to open ?
My thermostat is new.

Thanks

Defi 'D' Series gauge and sender in former throttlebody coolant line using fittings as described here...

Over 10 years now, no issues except replacement of cheap rubber hose for reinforced silicone.

I installed a VDO water temp gauge, with the sender in the upper radiator hose. A greddy adapter and a couple of hose clamps made the installation pretty easy. VDO gauges are OEM equipment on a lot of high end cars, and are reasonably priced. I have had mine for 14 years with no issues.

I still have a throttle body coolant line sender, but I dont use it. I found that the readings were consistently lower than my PFC, and my radiator hose sender. Others seem to like the throttle body sender, but not me.

Same here. Defi D series on both RX7's I've owned and always installed in the throttle body coolant line. Brass fittings are cheap and bullet broof.

+1 for Speedhut. They make some great gauges

I've also used Greddy and Defi in just about every car I've owned and never had a problem with either one
