What clutch to use?

Hi guys, I have a problem right now, i'm currently undergoing my auto to 5-speed swap and I would like to know which clutch I should buy. I was planing on buying the ACT streetlite flywheel and put a ACT sprung kit clutch on my car because i've heard thats its better to use a sprung clutch on a lightened flywheel.

But now I dont know anymore, cuz I called a shop *JRP Online* and they told me that they dont sell ACT because its crap. That the guy I spoke to had one and said it was crap. He only sells Clutch masters.

Now I really dont know what to do because, you go on any of our rx7 stores on the web like www.rx7store.net, www.gothamracing.com, rotaryextreme.com etc etc and they all sell either Exedy, ACT or no-name spec * clutches. How come I never see RPS or Clutch masters on any of their site?

So thats my dilemna, maybe if some of you could tell me if you have a lightened flywheel, and a Sprung clutch and tell me what you think about it and etc it would greatly help me. I mean how can ACT be crap if all our Icon Webstore sell them like hotcakes?

Thanks
Frank

He's a Centerforce dealer, what do you expect him to say???

ACT clutches seem to hold up far better than Centerforce clutches do, at least in the FD application. There are a billion threads on clutches, including some within the last two weeks. It really depends on what power levels you will be running and how much street driving the car will see.

I got the exedy hyper one flywheel clutch combo. I went with the intermediate weight flywheel. I'm glad too, because it wants to die from a roll as is. The clutch is mildly stiff and pretty "on/off". It also makes noise when it's cold. So far no other problems, and overall I'm pleased. It's a killer in traffic though.

Get an ExedY Hyper Single from rotaryextreme. double check cause i'm not positive but it should included the flywheel. none of the kits will include the counterweight needed, so be shure to pull that off of your auto tranny.

I had the ACT HD/SS (sold it with $70 SS clutch line for $100 shipped) and ACT street light (paid $250, sold for $150) and they were a gret combo for being slightly moded (maybe 325hp). The racelight is only recomended for high torque or maybe autox race only. For drag, stock flywheel is best. Streetlight is the best all around flywheel. Sprung clutch is softer, not shure why someone is telling you it's better for a LW flywheel.

If you still cant decide you will need to post more info:
How much HP will car be?
What type of use (drag, autoX, street)?
Will you use A/C alot?
SOft pedal feel or stiff pedal for harder launch?

Don't mena to hi-jack your thread. Maybe somebody can help us both. I just purchased an FD with a OS Giken Twin-plate, now my left leg is bigger than my right and I have whip lash. I'm trying to figure out my options. I'm looking for something streetable(daily driver), that can hold a 300-400 HP range. A/C will be used, and I'm looking for a way softer pedal than this clutch. Is there anyway to mix and match with what I have or do I have to get a whole new set up, if so, any ideas? Thanks.

Exedy twin plate is softer, D-Core is even smoother but even more expensive. You should be able to use Exedy Hyper single (they don't recomend for any kind of drag launches). You will want a street light wieght flywheel to drive with A/C (ACT, Racing Beat, etc). Exedy and ACT have a race light flywheel but they should be considered track only.

exedy hyper single is a great clutch, but if you dont wanna spend that much ACT is a really good clutch as well.

How much HP will car be? around 350
What type of use (drag, autoX, street)? mostly drag and solo1
Will you use A/C alot? Not alot, right now the system as a flaw so i dont use it.
Soft pedal feel or stiff pedal for harder launch? Doesnt really matter

I was wondering also if I would be able to use a Manual flywheel, even if its not balanced with my motor or self balanced. I want to have the best inertia possible
for drag racing. Like said at first, i was thinking about hte heavyer version of the ACT flywheel but I would like maybe something heavy.

Thanks
Frank

If you are only making ~350rwhp, you dont need to go overkill on the clutch. I bought an Exedy HD street clutch (OEM organic disk, Heavier than stock pressure plate) for $250 shipped on ebay and i'm making 370 rwhp and it hold fine, just my $0.02.

Exedy Single will work with your HP
Exedy Single cerametalic not recomended for drag (maybe carbon single or twin)
Carbon not good for AutoX
Med/Light flywheel will be streetable with A/C
Softer pedal is more streetable (sprung clutch), Puck on/off type is for drag/race

Manual flywheel? OEM flywheel? ...OEM is best for drag (heavy flywheel helps offset low torque rotary) and has built in counterweight.
ACT only has med weight streetlite and lightweight racelite

Call Exedy and ask for a tech. The Japanese guy is very helpfull. Sounds like Exedy Hyper Single (unsprung) Carbon may be what you want if you don't mind the price, otherwise keep the OEM flywheel and call ACT for PP & sprung/unsprung choices.

i run the act extreme and im putting down over 400whp for over 10,000 miles. no problems, and we have run many act clutches on shop cars with no problems.

99% of dealers will sell you whatever they make the most money on.
