What broke, Transmission or Clutch?

Allright so here's a story from my mini road trip adventure! I was going for a 2 hour drive up island this week and on the way back down that same night my car decided to die on me. This is after the lovely omen of my headlight cover comming off and hitting the windshield on the way up (The headlights werent up either >.<)

I noticed the problem on the way up, basically I was shifting fine into gears but was running about 4-5000rpm to get anywhere but I wasnt sure what was going on so I pressed on because it would settle down after a while. On the way back however it didnt take long for it to be around 6-7000rpm in 5th gear on the highway when all of a sudden I realized that I wasnt gaining any speed. Instead I was drifting so I pulled over to the side of the road only to realize that I wasnt going anywhere after that.

I had someone come by the next morning as we waited for the lovely $270 tow truck ride home and he said it was most likely the transmission.

Whats happening is that I can turn the car on hit the gas and the engine will do its thing but it wont go anywhere. In fact I dont need to use the clutch at all to change gears and it wont even accept that im in a gear (which is why im not getting anyways). This is why I think it could be the clutch by it was shifting gears earlier and this is why I think its the transmission.

Im really hoping its the clutch because thats alot cheaper than a transmission but because I would have to get it towed to a mechanic to get there opinion I thought that I would come to you guys first and get your opinion and just go off of that.

Its a hard thing to kind of explain so I hope you understand and that somone knows the solution.

Thanks for your time guys!

Brian

sounds like the clutch is done man. Has happened to me in tons of cars. If it was the trans it would be atleast grinding when you shift. Pressure plate might have collapsed and now the clutch is at all times disengaged.

That would make me a very happy camper if it was just the clutch. Once the weather has cleared here im gonna take a look.

sounds like exactly what happened to me....and it was clutch then...so i'm gonna say more than likely clutch....1 way you might can check is if you still have your aws system on, put it in first and start it while cold...if it only revs to 1500 instead of the 2000 or whatever then the transmission is registering it in gear the clutch just isn't grabbing

it would me too, but theres a few tranny's in the for sale section for about the same price as a good clutch. so either way your not going to get out too bad. I blew the T56 in my WS6 and had to pay $2200 to have it rebuilt. Be glad you dont have to do that lol.

The chances of it being your transmission, without there being any bad noises coming from the transmission itself, is pretty slim in my experience. If everything is working right, except its just revving up freely in gear, then your most likely culprit is the clutch as you are no longer transferring power from the engine to the transmission. Since the clutch is your connection point between the two, it's the most logical place to look first. Good luck, and enjoy the R&R. :-) When I took my flywheel off, I used the handy dandy tool the bolts onto the engine and locks the flywheel using the starter ring teeth. Don't know where the part came from as the previous owner supplied it with the vehicle when I purchased the FD. Made the job easy though. As for disengaging the clutch from the release bearing, all it takes is a long flathead screwdriver. Insert it between the retaining ring and the release bearing and twist. It should just pop right off.
