Anyway, hose blew off just below oil filter. I'm wondering about the black part of the connector. Is it part of some original hose or is it supposed to be there whatever it is?

That is an odd looking plastic piece... It is not part of the original hose.
I wonder if the pipe broke at some point and that thing is holding both parts together. Really odd.

That indeed is a factory part. Most rebuilds we remove it and just clamp the hose to the metal pipe so exactly what you see here does not happen.
Grab the plastic with a pliers, twist it around and eventually the plastic will fail and all come off. Then pull the plastic out of the hose and slide the hose over the metal pipe. Use a worm drive clamp or other adjustable clamp as the spring clamp isnt tight enough and you will have a leak.

If I'm looking at it correctly it looks like the plastic disconnect is still hooked to the pipe, which means the pipe to the engine block (IIRC it connects at the iron not the rotor housing) any way it's obviously broken off from the motor and you are going to have to either remove the remainder of the pipe and either install a new factory pipe or tape it and put some form of hose connection in it's place. Theres no other way to repair that kind of break with what you have. It's not uncommon for people to get rid of the plastic connector, but the pipe is still usually in the engine block.
the quick disconnect is plastic, the spot it connects to is metal. just be careful when you do it.

IMHO, I recommend using the plastic hose "quick" disconnect. It spaces the rubber hose away from the block a bit, and that area is prone to getting oil on it from the filter drips during an oil change. Ask any FC owner - this is a MAJOR problem on the FC, the FC just clamps onto the block, and goes through heater hoses like candy. Oil softens the rubber, it splits, and you're on the side of the road.
By the way, I've yet to find out the proper way to quickly disconnect that stupid thing. It's more of a quick connect, really.
Anyhow, that quick disconnect isn't expensive, it's easy to put on, and it's well worth having. If I were you, I'd do it right - get a new quick disconnect and a new heater hose, replace both, and you'll be set for a long time to come.

Even if I replace it, I still have to get the old one off.
Picked up a small hand saw today, hope it will let me cut the plastic fitting off.
Then I'll decide whether to replace it or just clamp to the pipe.

...Mazda should have made everything quick-disconnect...since you gotta pull the motor every 60k miles...lol
..actually that quick-disconnect was really a stupid idea...like the primary cat and composite radiator...the plastic key hole cover...fuel rails mounted directly on block....

There is also a 'Ford' replacement version readily available at stores like O'Reilly's, AUTOZONE, Pepboys, etc. It is the exact same part.

Well when i took mine off i noted the order in disassembly.
Rubber O ring/plastic washer thingy (concave on both sides/Ruber O ring/plastic peice/locking plastic peice..
I am not reinstalling mine. The O rings are swollen and wont go back in, so im just going to connect the hose directly to the metal nipple off the block. Ill cover the heater hose with something to protect it from oil though.

thanks for the help. i usually make sure i know how things are when i take them off but racing beat did this for me since i forgot to take it off before taking in the housing for lapping soo that left me clueless lol

Yep I used to buy them at my local parts house. Same part for a Ford Aerostar.
