It's really hard to have a ballpark. You can do everything from used engines on the cheap that you install yourself, to fully built race motors installed by pros.

Also, many of the guys here do the work themselves - I have no idea what a labor bill looks like .

If you are not going to do it yourself, the cheapest route is probably a Mazda reman from Malloy for $2k plus about $1k labour for removal and installation. However, there are many other parts that will probably need to be replaced while the engine is being reinstalled (FPD, vacuum+coolant hoses, gaskets, clean injectors, etc.) so a more realistic range would be $5k-$6k. Add $1k for a transmission rebuild and perhaps another $1k for a turbo rebuild and you are at $8k before you know what hit you.

And there is a none-too-remote possibility that you may have to go through at least part of this again in a year or two if the reman is one of the dodgy ones.

There is a reason why 80k mile FDs with their original engines are not all that expensive...

If I recall, you bought a used engine and installed it yourself. That would fall outside the definition of 'easy' for many people. Am not sure if the transmission is included in that $4k either.

If you can convince a mechanic to work for $0 per hour, your estimate is spot on though.
