Just try searching for "rebuild". There are many threads on various shops. No one will agree on "one" rebuilder, however you'll find all the ones people recommend.

I just don't like the Pettit rebuild packages because they don't offer an option do rebuild using 2mm Apex seals. I don't see the need to run 3mm seals when I'm not going to be approaching the 20psi mark with boost. I might see as high as 18, but that would be TOPS!! 3mm are just overkill for my situation. That's what I think anyway.

He is an Audi Driving School instructor and his car is tracked a lot. He doesn't drag it all that much but he does hit it every now and then just to see what the car will do.

After seeing the pounding he puts on the car Pettit will definitely see my engine if I do a rebuild instead of a reman (I have a reman now).

i had them do a street port last time with 3mm apex seals.they did a great job and all but i really want someone i know is going be doing the work and want to be abel to talk to the guy one on one at petit he just has one of his many employies do the work whitch is fine im sure i mean i had good luck last time with them.

I've heard both pineapple and Pettit are good.

BUT:
My motor was done by Dave @ KD, and apart from a little wait time, I couldn't be happier. Dave is everything you always hope specialty/tuner shop owners will be but usually aren't. HONEST, friendly, highly knowledgeable, great attention to detail, and gives you the little "extra" without milking you for every dime.

I can't really answer that as I've never had a rebuild or talked to Pettit about theirs. That's a question you need to ask Pettit. I'm sure if you asked for 2MM, that's what they'll give you. They are a shop after all, they still operate on money.

IMO, if all you want is a rebuild with 2MM seals, just get a reman. You can always get the reman ported for around $300.

I'm working with Dave and Kim right now. They are building me a ported motor with all the motor mods for maximum reliability and performance of a ported motor.

Thus far, Dave has been great to work with. He's taken the time to answer ALL of my questions, and has recommended all the bolt-on mods and ancillary equipment that's needed for my car's build-up.

At no time did Dave recommend anything frivolous or extraneous. An example is the battery relocation. He says a more cost-effective way is miniaturization with a stock Miata battery, since the stock Rx7 battery box gets cut down to fit with the Greddy 2-row FMIC.

Although Dave does NOT mail-order tune Apex Power FCs anymore (due to liability issues with failed motors), Dave has agreed to use his FC Datalogit to pre-tune my Apex Power FC (with Commander), based on Kim's porting job, my Japan spec twins (11 psi), Greddy FMIC and freed-up exhaust (dp/hiflo cat/RB catback). The only fine-tuning that needs to be done with the Power FC after motor break-in is adjusting the idle AFRs (via Power FC Commander).

During the build-up process, his wife, Kim, will take pics of each stage, and send the pics to me (backed up via photo CD ), so I can be taken along for a "tour" during the build up process.

Once complete He will ship the newly ported/"built" motor and Power FC together to my local shop for the swap.

Total time for a build-up of a street ported motor is a little over 15 days including transit time from Malloy Mazda Woodbridge VA (I ordered a brand new 13B REW Reman from Ray Crowe), to KD Rotary Nazareth PA; and from KDR to AIM Tuning Indianapolis IN.

BTW, I highly recommend porting a brand new motor, rather than an existing core that you rebuild. The quality and durability of your ported motor will be much higher, than with a rebuilt core.

Mazda Remans have brand new housings; and some of the Remans have new rotors also (Kim will find out once she tears down my new Reman).

Malloy Mazda, has the best pricing over any of the Mazda dealers. I got my new 13B REW Reman for $1950 plus shipping (new motor shipped to KDR, old core shipped from AIM Tuning to Malloy Mazda).

Ray Crowe, Malloy Mazda Parts Manager provides outstanding service. FWIW he does not add the $1000-core charge to your motor purchase; he trusts that you will be shipping back a good usable core!

BTW, I tried contact Rob Golden (of Pineapple Racing) FIRST, for a ported motor, but he has never returned any of my emails, so I guess it's his LOSS, and my gain, that I went with Dave and Kim of KDR Performance, Inc

Yep as far as I knew before I believe Kim does the motors and Dave does the transmissions. Only thing that I think might be sent out for 3rd party is turbo rebuilds.

I personally love KDR, but there are lots of great tuners to go to. I advise you to take all of these suggestions and use them to make your own decision. All of the above mentioned seem to have great feedback.

It's not worth rebuilding your own motor. Start with a fresh remanufactured 13B REW.

If you live in the midwest or east cost, buy from Malloy Mazda (Woodbridge VA). Malloy Mazda's remanufactured 13B REW motors are arguably the best quality and best priced of all the Mazda dealers. Ray Crowe (Parts Manager) charges $1950, and doesn't include a $1000-core charge UNLESS you plan to keep your old motor.

If you rebuild your own motor, and find you need new side housings and rotors, costwise in parts, you're already near a newly assembled remanufactured factory motor.

New rotor housings are ~$600 each (less if you have a Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development parts discount).

Include labor to pay a competent rotary motor builder, and it starts to make sense to just buy a reman motor.

Remanufactured factory 13B REW motors have a received a bad rep a short while ago with regard to quality control. I think this has for the most part been corrected with the latest lots of motors.

"Remanufactured" Mazda factory 13B REW rotaries are essentially new motors. Nearly all come with new side housings, and some with new rotors. To make up the shortage in supply, Mazda had infused the inventory with completely new motors, so you might be one of the lucky ones

Street ported motors should start from new remans, not from your old core--UNLESS--you're planning to install new side housings...
