Went to El Mirage Dry lake bed today...
It's a nice piece of flat land with about a 5 mile strech where you can do top speed runs...more info here:

I've found my speedometer to be a little optimistic. In this land of painful speed limits, I time mile markers on the highway while doing 60mph. That way I can do a little arithmatic and discover how far over the speed limit I'm really going when I cease obstructing traffic. If it takes longer than a minute to go the mile, the speedometer is reading a higher number than the speed actually is. Who knows what the calibration is in the realm of 160mph, though.
Radar guns work to. While in college I had one for a while. Neat toy.
