Went to El Mirage Dry lake bed today...

It's a nice piece of flat land with about a 5 mile strech where you can do top speed runs...more info here:

I have never tried to top end mine but I have taken 4th gear all the way through until around 143mph. Then I slowed down once in 5th because I was on my way to work and any faster would have been too much for public streets.

Just curious

I know you have a touring, but do you have front/rear spoilers? If not, how stable did going that fast feel?

I think top speeds are reduced a little on lake beds as compared to runs on pavement due to the
softer salt surface.

it was extremely stable...I don't have a front or rear spoiler. however, I have JIC Sf1 coilovers, which makes a hugh difference in stability.

wow... that's very cool. do you just go out there and go at it, or do you have to register somewhere or what? Are there lots of random people out there doing the same thing?

sounds like fun. may be worth a short trip.

I've found my speedometer to be a little optimistic. In this land of painful speed limits, I time mile markers on the highway while doing 60mph. That way I can do a little arithmatic and discover how far over the speed limit I'm really going when I cease obstructing traffic. If it takes longer than a minute to go the mile, the speedometer is reading a higher number than the speed actually is. Who knows what the calibration is in the realm of 160mph, though.
Radar guns work to. While in college I had one for a while. Neat toy.

Lou Young's car was off by only a few MPH at around 170 on pavement with a radar gun. I would think the FD speedo is reasonably accurate, like +/- 5MPH.
