why don't more people do this? Is it a matter of not being able to fit a large enough filter down there for the twins? Cuz just about every rice rocket ive ever messed around with has a cold-air down in the fender; Now if you're talking V8's...they just can't fit down there so it makes sense -- is this the same reason for the rx7s?

I commend the work, well done it should work nicely. Just remember to not drive into any puddles!

i see this as a lot of unnecessary work. it is very easy to obtain cool non-radiator heated fresh air. you can even mod the stock airbox (search: cheap bastard's intake mod)

i have the M2 intake box and it draws virgin air from the same spot. it was just a drop in box too. didn't have to remove my bumper or anything

 

that's going to be so much fun when it's time to clean the filter...granted the location you would have to clean it more often....

Love the idea though...

I am doing a custom air duct to get fresh air to the filter too...

Nice work but I have to agree with some of the others. It is really easy to get a decent, working 'true' cold air intake and retain the stock look..something I am devoted to. I modified my stock air box, ran a 2.5" hose out the bottom of it next to the radiator and off to the side, so that it snarfs up totally cool air. Best thing? You can't tell a thing from outside the car or inside the engine bay.

its nicly designed, but i question the effectness of cold air intakes. expecially with the fd bacause the engine bay retains alot of heat. wont the aluminum get real hot, and heat the air in the piping. the longer the piping, the longer the air is heated. so the air going through the system is still hot, maybe even hotter than a short ram setup

this is just something that i thought of a while back. i guess the only way this could be proven or disproven would be to check intake temps, and maybe even hp or boost numbers on a dyno. anyone have any specs they could throw at me?

 

It wouldn't work on an R1/R2. At least in my part of the world, it would also tend to plug up with road debris, bugs, leaves etc. being down that low. And if you got caught in the rain, there's that other issue that you touched on....That said, I bet it is effective, especially in the Southwest.

I'm the one who made the intake.
- Its super easy to clean, just remove the passenger side plastic under-tray and unbolt.
- Car had the stock intake before, can't compare exact intake temps as I did the water/methanol injection at the same time. I am however doing the same intake on another fd and it will be the only modification, it currently has the apex units.
- Gotta remember that the stock air-box blocks the radiator outlet, again this wasn't done just for colder air temps. Its hot here in AZ in the summer time, FDs have it rough here.
- Yes it does have to be cleaned a lot more often. We do however go months on end without rainfall here. Not to mention I seriously doubt this guy drives in the rain, its not his only car. Driving FDs in the rain is kinda a big no no to me anyhow.
- Yes the rest of the intake tract heats the intake temp charge up a lot. Just look at your intake temp sensor in factory location. It shows your UIM temp charge. Starting off colder will obviously be better.
- And yes this doesn't work on r1/r2 cars. My solution is a bigger passenger unit with a fan.

I think you mean a bigger DRIVER'S side unit (oil cooler) with a fan. This intake takes up the passenger side oil cooler area.

You only have to worry about hydro-lock with an intake if you COMPLETELY submerge the filter in water. I dont know about you, but I am not gonna even think about driving in water deep enough to submerge half of my front bumper.

 

Exactly. Obviously the engine can take some water on and be ok...water injection. Like you said, as long as it isn't submerged.

 

Actually, I think if the water would do anything it would slow down airflow once the filter got wet. I was mostly joking.

I've read this thread about 3 times now, and i don't see "WHY?" this setup would be beneficial..

even with any auxilary injection, why would you want to run a turbo setup w/out a intercooler? just having a intercooler of anykind will greatly reduce your intake temp w/out a cold air intake. cold air intake only really benefits N/A cars.

even if it rains it won't matter because by the time water goes through the hot turbo compressor it'll evaporate before it even reaches the UIM.

Kevin Wyum made something virtually the same thing years ago, 95-96-ish.

I'm not sure how you routed it, but unless you remove some crap, cut the chassis, or use non pop-up headlights (what Kevin did), you can't get a good-sized tube down there.
