They aren't actually on the heatshield itself, you have to loosen up (remove) the bolts that hold the ABS unit itself to the frame before you can remove the heatshield.

oh, and even then, you need to use some "bending" force to get the heatshield out...at least I did. ie, pull the ABS unit up slightly, then yank and switch on the ABS shield to get it out. it has funky bends/kinks in it.

That stupid thing is a PITA.. I went through the same thing when I installed my DP. I was having a hard time with it so I said F-it and just left it on, I worked around it so I don't think you need to remove it.. although that may depend on which DP you have.

my car isn't here right now, otherwise I would take a pic, highlight the bolts and post it for you. sorry man
and good luck. The DP install is a good beginner mod. You get to tear apart your intakes, remove some heat shields, crank on some exhaust bolts, etc...lets us know how it turns out Rx-7$4$me.

Don't try and pull out the downpipe heatshield. It will drop off when you start to pull out the pre-cat. Tight fit, huh?
The nut on the firewall side of the ABS unit helps to get the shield off also. Watch your fingers, that aluminum POS is sharp and gashed me good, but it does look good polished.
