Weird Groaning Noise from Rear Axle
Weird Groaning Noise from Rear Axle
I'm getting a weird groaning noise from the rear axle / diff , when I apply strong throttle around a corner 90 degrees... is my diff fried !? What's involved in just replacing the diff !? And where can I get one !?
Well I don't know about taking LSD before sharp turns, they might want to bite you !

But I don't remember this groaning comming from the rear when I bought the car, or else I've never paid too much attention to what was going on in the back of the car. I'm always paranoid about the motor ....

Oh no! More diff trouble from our recent drag racing trip!
Derek, I used to get some groaning around corners but my car doesn't do it anymore and I am not totally sure why. It might have been the exhaust hitting something (not enough to make an obvious clunk, but perhaps enough to transfer from vibrations). I did remove the little brace at the rear end of the transmission tunnel since it was hitting my exhaust (or perhaps more correctly, my exhaust was hitting it). Perhaps that eliminated the groaning. I want to get a brace back on there to keep the chassis stiff, but mine was cracked and I haven't gotten around to fabbing a replacement with more room for the exhaust pipe.
Checking the fluid level is a good idea, too. If it has been a while, it might be a good idea to just change the fluid. I remember that mine was beat (pretty much silver in color from all the metal in it) when I changed it the first time. The tranny fluid seemed to be in much better shape. I think the diff is pretty rough on the fluid. I need to change mine again soon.

YOU HAVE AN EXHAUST !? ????
I have straight Pipe from Cat Back... and Downpipe, so the only thing I DO have is a Cat....
I'll try to get Tranny Fluid and Dif Fluid Changes..
And yes I know LSD = Limited Slip Differential.
I just like Missunderstandings, especially houmerous ones...

Try checking your drivers side engine mount. If it is broken the engine lifts when cornering and the downpipe hits the frame. The noise it makes sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car or at least it did in mine. Also if the mount is broken there is a good chance you will also need to reseal the oil pan.
