Weird condition: smell gas when warming up...
Over the past few weeks I've noticed a faint smell of raw fuel when cold. Its only when cold, once up to temps no smell whatsoever. Is the FPD's symptom the same or is this something else? I tried to look around and rev it, see if i could smell it with the hood open but didnt do it.
My FD runs like **** when cold(no aws) and i'm hoping that the gas smell is just it running overly rich when cold. I was messing around with the PFC commander's water temp corrections...could that be it?
I searched for the fpd but found nothing similar to this...anyone else's car doing/done this???

I know the stock ECU runs the car really rich before the normal operating temp, and I assume the PFC does too because my car runs like crap till its warm.. just fyi

But thats the thing, it runs crappy and i know its way too rich when cold. The concern is how rich is it, enough to smell inside the car????
The fuel smell comes shortly after starting it and while driving but seems to dicipate once temps are about 60 C...

Check your gas cap. It sounds stupid but your gas tank will become pressurised as the car warms up. The gas cap has a spring inside it that seals the tank and the filler tube, if the spring is weak you will smell vapors. If you know someone who does state inspections have them test it for you. All they do is attach it to a plate and apply vacuum to see if it holds the pressure kind of like testing a radiator cap.

I had the same problem after my rebuild it seem to have corrected itself. My tech couldn't find any wrong.
I have a PFC and other than hunting for the right idle during warm it run fine. Runs fine cold and hot just in the middle it seem confused. I don't really put my foot into it when cold though. I had to once when I pull out in traffic and had no problems ran stronger if you ask me. Still need to get it dyno tuned and need a few more parts before that happens.

I got worried cause i've had the car for 7 years and aside from a leaky LIM gasket 5 years ago i cannot remember ever smelling fuel at all.
I cant find a wet spot anywhere and since it goes away when warm i'm not worried about fire.
I guess if theres more than a few of us with the same issue it should be one of those common little nuisance that we inherit by doing mods. I'm sure a little time with a datalogit wouldnt hurt...
thanx fellas

It could be a leaky pulsation damper. This is a common problem for aging RX-7's. The engine heat causes it to crack over time. It is not something to mess around with. Your car could catch on fire if you don't take care of it. Any good shop should be able to determine if this is the problem. Search the forum for pulsation damper.
One other way to check if it is the ECU is to put the stock ECU back in and leave it idling (no boost). If you still smell fuel, you have a leak somewhere.

You should be worried. Gas smell is not normal on the FD. It's normal if your **** is fucked up...
Story time:
There was once a dashing young Rx-7 club member named montego. but back then (1998), montego did not have a montego blue FD. He actually had a pristine 1993 silver FD. Beautiful machine that was, Silver in all it's greatness it looked straight out of the showroom floor. Perfect working turbo sytem full stock exhaust system, Not a single door ding. Montego drove that proudly of he loved the car very dearly.
Anyway one fine morning montego gets on his ride, starts it up and gets a faint smell of gas but it quickly subsided. "Weird?" he thought to himself. THe next morning it was the same scenario. So was the third day. A quick faint smell then no more. Montego decided not to take any chances so he had the car looked at. The mechanic could not find a thing wrong with it so the concensus was "well it goes away so therefore it should be ok. If it gets worse do bring it back". Montego drove happily away in his ignorance as his FD just had only a minor annoyance.
One week passed and montego was coming home from a party. When all of the sudden a STRONG gas smell overwhelmed him. He quickly pulled over to the side of the road but then the unthinkable... A flame shot out from under the hood. Uh oh....By the time montego opened the hood (a few seconds) the fire had already been extinguished itself out due to lack of oxigen. But the damage had been done. That beautiful machine was soon declared a total loss.
The insurance company blamed the fire on an cracked fuel injector O ring. They said that once the ring got warm (almost instantly) it would expand and therefore close the gap(s).
Moral of the story: fix your ****.

my car recently started smelling like gas.. i have a PFC in the car. but there was never a gas smell. and the sitution is very similar to 2fast7s . the smell is only there during start up and is coming from the exhaust. when i checked under the hood there was no smell.. just the exhaust.. i'll also check my fuel cap too.. So if i have no gas leaking onto the drive way.. no smell of gas under the hood.. what could be the culprit to this common situation.. and if the FPD is leaking wouldn't you smell gas under the hood?

To test your fuel system for leaks, turn the key into the on position (do not start your engine), jumper the fuel pump by use of a jumper wire (a paper clip works great) in the diagnosis box mounted on the driver's side fender wall. If you do this correctly, you will hear a distinct hum from the rear of the car. That is your fuel pump. This will pressurize the entire fuel system in your car and allow you to look under the hood and sniff 'til your hearts content. If you have a leak, you will eventually smell fuel no matter how small. Follow your nose and you will find a wet spot. The correct prongs in the diagnosis box to jumper the fuel pump are shown in the FSM in several spots. There is also a diagram in the cap of the diagnosis box. You are best advised to find the source of the smell. Montego tells no lies. Also know that the charcoal canister (located above your left rear axle) can become saturated and give off a fuel odor.
