watergate porting quick question

ok question 1: is there any harm in porting the wastegate of turbos that i will be rebuilding if they end up being used w/ out a midpipe?? reason is im planning on running a high flow metalit CAT which is said to flow as well as a midpipe. if i dont end up being able to aquire one, and have to stick with a stock CAT would a ported wastegate cause me any problems?

other question (which i probably should should search for, but when in rome...) there are 2 wastegate type things on our twins... i know one is a wastegate, and im pretty sure the other is the prespool control gate. does the prespool control gate need to be ported as well? im assuming not, but i thought id ask anyway

Port the wastegate with no problems with stock exhast . The prespool port is good stock as it is larger than the WATERGATE and only serves one turbo ,while the wastegate vents both turbos .

do yourself a favor.
Search and see what the waste gate looks like

and then get 2 bottles of carb cleaner and clean the hell out of the housings.. Small pieces of metal from porting will cost you a new set of turbos quicker than you can install them!

goodluck

i know what the wastegate looks like... i have a dissassembled set of twins on my desk. this set has eaten an apex seal so the rotating assembalies are not useable. on the set that currently is in my car, the secondary is not coming online and blowing smoke at anything past 4.5K RPM. the set in there has some massive heat cracks, so i will swap out that portion for the secondary exhaust side on my unuseable set... yea, 2 FD turbos makes one almost decent one!

then i will use a turbocity rebuild kit for the rotating assembalies. im not one to do things "hack" style... if i do them i do them right... i just wanted to make sure it was ok to use a ported WG with a stock exhaust if i dont end up with the "special" metalit HF cat

i will also most likely send all of the exhaust side housings etc, to have them ceramic coated or similar.

the other think that i was contemplating was doin a little experimentation with adding abradable seal material to the compressor sides of the turbos. the 99 spec ones have it... so whats stopping me from doing it myself? if i found some sort of material that wouldnt peel off (like some sort of rubbery plastic, or thick teflon coating... or something similar like that) then attached a high speed drill to the exhaust wheel to get it spinning fast... i should be able to slowly seat the compressor side in place while the extra material gets ground off by the fast spinning compressor wheel. i think it will work, and i may be up for trying it. my motor has 85K on it, and i know it will not last forever, so any crazy experimentation should be done before a brand new motor is installed.

the only thing that i am worried about with this idea is.... what happens when you develop shaft play in your turbos that have an abraidable seal??? say you have a set of 99 turbos with the seal... if you begin to develop shaft play that seal will be eaten up and shot through the intake right? that doesnt sound so good to me.... any thoughts anyone, since this could happen with the 99 spec ones, and possibly if i try to make my own abradable seal....
