don't race, don't need to
TOTAL PITA, no question. Basically, line up the wheel and the pully, and shove. It's hard but should go on there. If it really just wont, there are problems other than the ones we're dealing with.
You of course have loosened the air pump bolt and adjusting bolt? Juuuuust making sure!

I should also mention that if you are having this much trouble, the belt may be too tight anyway. The specification for a used belt (anything after ten minutes of use) is 0.3 inches for "moderate" pressure, rated as 22 lbs. Take a ruler, hold it on the A/C idler pully mount, and push the alt belt between thealt and the crank. It should move a bit more than 1/4 inch when you press "firmly". A too tight belt WILL prematurely cause your water pump to fail and start leaking, and might screw up your front eccentric shaft (read crank) bearing as well, causing the whole engine to need rebuilding, and you just got that done!!!
