watched a 3 rotor at the san diego auto cross today
went down to the auto cross today in sd. saw a brilliant orange 3 rotor third gen..the one from turbo magazine.
it sounded fantastic. it had a really deep and full exhaust.....seeing it on the track..wow...a TORQUE MONSTER!! Ive never seen an rx spin out like that in my life.... smoke all over the place. Though i must admit, I have never saw an rx7 run over a lot of street cones though either. It was by far the best car at the track for autocross. it was entirely gutted for racing and had some serious rubber...I dont think there was much more a guy could do for the car to make it any sweeter for that track. However, he was beaten by the zo6's and the modified vipers by a solid 2 seconds...the top car of the day was an old vw racer with rusty spark plugs (no lie haha...the vw kit hit a 76 second time on the track and the rx hit an 80)
spoke briefly with the guy about the car a couple times...didnt learn much though...he was very defensive about the car...competitive maybe..but definitely not open like all the forum guys when it comes to the car discussion.
the car was a great performer and sounded smooth as can be... with a nice idle "street port style". Before he started it up I watched the crowds gather around the car on occasion. FD's are tough..haha...ten years old now and still drawing all the looks.
In the end, if the driving was a lot better Im confident that a third gen could have taken the best time of the day out of 300 sportscars. just goes to show that money can buy you a sweet car but skillz on the course have to be earned.
On another opposite but similar note....the only car to wreck today was what looked like a black 93...only saw a glimpse of a smashed up front end and thrashed suspension. the guy driving didnt own the car and didnt realize the secondary at 4500 would kick him the way it did. that was the rumor anyways. either way, seeing a trashed fd bummed me out.
sorry for the bad grammar..its late and Im autocrossed out.

Sounds like it was fun. And you don't get to see 3 rotor FD's all time, at least we don't where I live. But I'm not sure what Brilliant Orange FD from Turbo Magazine you're talking about. The only one I remember is the one with RE Amemiya body kit. Or are you talking about Area51's old 3 rotor car that has the pettit widebody flares on it?

its defintley a 20b now...looks like an orange pettit banazai.
yeah that might be it...its got that big wing and a totally gutted interior now though (luxurious sheet metal welds keeps the driver comfortable while the rivets and simplcity impress the friends.)....its definitely a race car now...no turn signals...no lights...pure fast. its got different stickers on it now too. it was purple a couple months ago...now its back to orange.

Yeah that purple car (which was area 51s old car) was quoted to only have like 430 HP. I mean come on if i wanted to spend that kinda cash on a 20B it better be making 600 at the wheels.

The one you saw (w/ the 3 rotor and stripped) was probably Area 51's former 3 rotor. He got into an accident awhile back and that is why he purchased the Pettit flares (among other things).

Ahhh yes, that RX7 from Turbo...the purple/green one with road race suspension/Kinesis wheels. Owned by Jeff Keisel; title of the article was "Body and Soul." That thing looked sweet in the mag, I bet even sweeter in person. Would love to have seen it...you CA'ers dont know how good you have it

honestly..it was cool to see from the distance but up close it looks too much like a race car for my tastes..man..if my car would only perform like that one..hahah...BANZAI!!!!
anyhow...cool clip...those doods can drive....the guy in the 3rotor aint got those skillz...NOT EVEN CLOSE..he lost it in a big spin out (beautiful to see) and was timid on the next two runs in comparison....at least that is how it looked to me.
j
ps..so cal love...I think there are three events next month from what i heard...so you are in luck. pm me if you want to drive down.

delta rotary, he's also putting down about 490 ft/lbs. now how many rotaries have you seen with the same torque numbers as hp? besides, it's a roadrace car, not built for drag. about 450 is plenty to be competetive.

Maybe he didn't want to talk about the car because he didn't know too much about it. He did basically buy the car the way it is now from Area51. I don't mean to bag on the guy, maybe he does know his ****, but it seems like like he's always taking the credit for all of Dave's work.

i'll give the guy credit there...he was proud that pettit had built the car and even said he had about 15 places that had sponsored parts on the car. I asked who does his work locally and he said he does all his own work in his garage.
it was definitely ad torque monster....holy crap...anyone who doesnt think 400-500 ft lbs is enough is nuts...I run a fairly modded seven with upgraded turbos and most everything else...my car doesnt come close to his...you would have to see it to believe it....it was a mini viper out there...tires smoking...engine ***** out.

that orange scoot car is definately not the one that was at the autoX event...it's the Blue/purple Pettit car with the R-magic body kit and HKS cat back and big GT c/f wing...you know the one with the upside down efini emblem?
btw, I also started a thread(https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...13#post1038113) Only I made it 6 days after I attended the event...I also talked to the guy and he did seem kinda defensive but after his runs he told me that it was a pettit car and he totally re did it and re painted it. It looks AWESOME

It's definately Area51's old car, the worst part about it is not only does he not give credit, he takes the credit....(A while back he was selling the rear suspension on ebay and I believe took credit for designing it.)
