Use the search at the top of the page. This is a VERY discussed topic......

In short.
The Wastegate is locateded on/in the exhaust manifold. It bypasses exhaust air from the turbo to control boost preasure. Many stock wastegates are inside the manifold. All that is seen is the actuator and the rod. External wastegates are fully visible. Upgrading your wastegate can be tricky. Some of these FD experts will hop right on the is one for more specifics.

Good luck.

The waste gate on a third gen is not in the exhaust manifold, it is part of the turbos. The exhaust manifold is located between the block and the turbos. The pre-control is located in the exhaust manifold.

The wastegate is located inside the primary exhaust turbine housing, and cannot be replaced. It can however be ported if you take apart the turbos. They are much larger than the second gen waste gates, so they are usually not a problem unless you have extensive mods.

Get your wastegate ported if you have boost creep. Have it ported so that it is just smaller than the flapper door with very little overlap. Should do the trick.

Good luck.
