What exactly does a wastegate do? What does it look like?

"WASTEGATE - Valve that controls turbo boost pressure by allowing exhaust to bypass the turbo"

Check out this site, it will help you a lot.

It is an internal wastegate. There are two inside the turbo housings. One for each turbo.

Porting them is easy with a grinder once the turbos are off the car.

There are two wastegate-like devices in the sequential turbo assembly, but there is only one wastegate. The pre-control door lets exhaust around the primary turbo to feed the secondary turbo to "pre-spool" it. This pre-control only works below 4500 RPM, because at that point the big turbo control door opens and lets lots of exhaust into the second turbo. The wastegate also lets some exhaust around the primary turbo below 4500 RPM and dumps right into the downpipe. When both turbos are running, the wastegate does all the boost controlling by dumping exhaust from the manifold into the downpipe. The wastegate is located right next to the primary turbo's turbine, but it is actually used to control boost for both turbos because they share a common manifold.
