could have been removed if the car was damaged in that area.. or it could have been removed if the car was repainted..

There is no "plate" in the door jamb. The only "plate" is on the driver's side dash, where it is in all cars. The VIN is also stamped into the firewall above the UIM.
There is a sticker on the door jamb that may include the VIN with all the other chassis info (can't remember off the top of my head).

Maybe it was taken off to hide the real identity of the car I once knew a guy who knew a guy who bought a car that was re tagged and it was missing all the sticker vin numbers, but it had the one by the windshield and on the firewall.
