Very loud Popping sound....

Yesterday I took the 7 out and went for a quick spin. I got onto the freeway and floored it. When it got to ~18psi I heard a extremely loud continuous popping sound (sounded like a machine gun). I thought my engine was done for, but when I let off the gas everything seemed fine. It drives strong, no smoke coming out of the exhaust, all of my gauges say the car is working fine. Does anyone know what that was? Did I get away with detonation? I asked the mechanics at Hayes Rotary and they said if the car detonated, especially with my mods, it would run like crap, and that I would know for sure that it was detonation that I heard. I have a T88 w/ dp, md, exhaust, racing port, 1600 cc, IC, just about every mod known.

My guess would be a rich condition at wot dumping excess fuel into the exhaust which is igniting and causing your machine gun backfiring.

Might be an ignition problem too.
