very hard to turn ignition, whats wrong ?

Having a stupid problem that could leave me stuck. Starting yesterday when I put my key in the ignition its VERY hard to turn the key to start the engine. Some times it takes me 3 or 4 mintues before I can get it to turn over. The key goes in but I cant turn it. Its not like it used to be.

Is it the ignition lock? ( I have tried 3 different keys). Anyone have this problem? What do I do to fix this?
I get a new problem EVERY week with my beautiful car.

David

It could be the ignition lock. Try turning your steering column just a little to the right or left before turning the key...see if that'll help. The lock or your key for that matter may be worn.

Its not the key, I tried 3 different ones. Turning the wheel is necessary to get the key to turn, but doesn't always work. On the other hand, this morning, got in, put key in car no problems. Parked car, then needed to turn the car on again, and could not get it to turn. Its like off and on.

Sounds like the lockout from the steering wheel isnt allowing the key to turn all the way.

never had this problem in my rx but i know all my fords did this after they started getting a little older.

I know in my old 5.0 you could get inside the steering column and take the pin out that solved it for me.

the only problem with disconecting this is your wheel wont lock anymore doesnt bother me but..

im not sure how this would work in an rx-7 as ive never had the column apart to look at it but if you want i wanna run some wires through there anyway so ill take it apart and have a look at mine and see how its laid out.

it could also just be the ignition itself but thats not any fun to have replaced and it may not be necessary.

The dealer said its the lock mechanism, and mazda only sells the entire assembly. its 230.00.

I wonder how long before I cant drive it. My passenger side power window works when it wants to, other times doesn't work. My passenger side lock SOMETIMES locks when I lock my drivers side lock, sometimes does not lock or unlock. I had to replace my drivers side outer door handle cause it broke....Lets not even talk about the coolant problems and over heating problems that I used to have......too many other things to list.

I think my friend is right when he said owning an RX7 is like being married to a sexy crack addict. Always in need and expensive to maintain....
