Various 5spd conversion questions.

I'm looking into an automatic FD due to their low price and converting it to 5spd to save money. This car will be daily driven, no modifications, and rarely ran hard, because of this, i'm looking to save money in the conversion also.

Would a Turbo II transmission bolt in? I have a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate from a GSL-SE, would the flywheel work? I'm a little worried about using a clutch designed for 135hp in a 255hp (i'd like a little input on this).

Thanks for taking the time to read my dumb questions.

The tranny would NOT be a direct bolt in.

Thanks, i searched for "TII transmission FD" and got a headache trying to find what i was looking for.

I guess i will keep this car an Automatic, my mother is talking about giving me her car and buying a new one, i want to sell it for an FD, but the only thing worth around the same price is one with an Automatic ($8,000). If i keep it an Automatic, she can use it for a car to drive incase anything happens to her car.

You can always switch it over to a 5-speed at a later date. Personally, I'd just wait till you find one that has everything you want.

There are no issues with the stock automatic at stock or a little higher power levels. However, it's not a Level 10 tranny or anything so you won't have much luck bolting some huge single turbo on it and expect it to keep working nicely.

I agree with others.. save up and get the 5 sp version.

Otherwise, you would need, new harness, tranny, flywheel, starter (I'm pretty sure), ECU, drive shaft, pedals (which, I've heard its fairly hard to find), clutch, clutch slave cylinder, also you might have to mod or get the brake reservor to hook the slave cylinder,.. Man.. just get the 5 sp version.. by the time you spend all that time and money, its like getting a 5 sp version..

Also, if you are planning to make lot of power, you might want to change the rear plate for the engine.. as one of the bolt will not line up with the tranny.

I guess it will stay an Automatic, i didn't realize it'd need a new harness, driveshaft, etc. I've done 5spd conversions in FWD vehicles, there's alot less needed.

Do not use the TII stuff... not to mention balancing for the clutch and flywheel being differant between motors... I think the clutch type is differant as well.

The swap wasnt that bad... just be sure to USE the right parts to begin with. I am using the auto harnesses still with no problems, just takes a little splicing.

On the topic of price, I paid 13.5k for my FD... I spent maybe 2k in parts and did all my own labor to make it a manual... although I used upgraded parts as well (ACT S/S clutch, RB LW Flywheel...) in either case it is a trade off for time or money.

You may want to take a look at my tips and tricks for buying an FD -

http://www.clubrx.org/default.asp?id...ntent=25&mnu=5

Might be possible to find the right FD that's a 5-speed .

Personally, I can't STAND driving an automatic FD. Takes all the soul out of the car. Kudos to Mazda for making it, as they did sell a lot more cars by offering it in an automatic. Time to teach your mom to drive a stick . I taught my wife on an '87 GXL that I built for her .
