Vacuum Leak from Throttle Body

Hello,

Did a smoke test and smoke is coming from the throttle body area circled below. Looked around and doesn't look re-buildable, should I just be searching for a good used TB? At least I didn't have smoke coming from injectors or any of the joints between engine/LIM/UIM. Weird place for a vacuum leak though....

There's a shaft seal around the throttle body shaft. I'm not totally sure if it seals 100% air tight by design or not.

Regardless I don't know of a source for a replacement. Also that would be a pretty not-fun job to replace.

I wouldn't worry about that too much as far as a vacuum leak is concerned.

I had the same issues in the same place. Actually I just rebuilt another throttle body yesterday and took pictures to do a write up on refurbishing them. I just haven’t had time to do so yet. it’s pretty involved to disassemble one and reassemble with the correct adjustments. But not A difficult task.

Your quad rings are deteriorating, allowing it to leak. This made my car run funny at idle. You must completely disassemble the throttlebody to get to the quad rings. Chances are any replacement you get will leak as well. Here’s what you need ..... ( five total is needed )

Hey man, check out this post for making one. https://www.rx7club.com/general-rota...sters-1127564/. I just disconnected the boost gauge vacuum hose, placed the outlet for the smoke there, and then capped off the greddy elbow with a spray can cap that was close in size to 2.75". If you want to do this legit there is some stuff on amazon, including 2.75" plugs you can use that will seal up nicely to the silicone couplers. Also saw a few videos if you are a cigar smoker, to just smoke a cigar into the intake, but haven't tried it.

Wow, crazy that this caused idle issues. Was thinking it over and it surprises me that since the MAP sensor is after the throttle body, this shouldn't be an issue, but hey you never know. If you could send me the pictures that would be amazing though, seems like if its a rubber part it will eventually deteriorate and this will eventually be as common as the CPU#2 or gauge cluster capacitor repairs...

All FD throttle bodies leak on smoke test, at least according to one of the specialists here. It would have to be a fairly gross to affect idle I'd imagine.

It made the idle high. After I fixed it, I had to re-adjust it. I will post pictures when I do the write up. A lot of info to condense.

No, they do not. Both of the ones I refurbished hold pressure above 15psi and pass the smoke test. Now how big of a leak will affect performance ( idle, boost, etc ) is to be decided. I’m sure if it’s small enough, it won’t really be an issue. Ymmv.
