The speedometer input wires are on plug "X-14" (see illustration above for location).

You can see the wires in the plug schematic below, marked "O" (orange) and "G" (green). The orange wire is ground from the instrument cluster, and the green wire is the signal (AC pulse generated by the VSS) return wire.

I'm really not trying to be rude, but I can't even believe that you just wired everything together without fully understanding what you were doing. You assured me that you had a shop manual with the wiring schematics. Did you just have a lot of trouble understanding them?

I sincerely and truly hope that you didn't do any damage to your wiring harnesses with the alternator issue and the other mistakes that seem to have been made. Hope this helps.

BTW, the yellow/white (Y/W) wire is the coolant temperature sender. Green/yellow (G/Y) is the 12V+ signal from the "Meter" (15 AMP) fuse, and yellow/red (Y/R) is the switched wire for the reverse lights. These two wires went to the reverse light switch on the transmission, obviously.

i have the vss rewired.

like i said jim i had something backwards on a sending unit. i just hafta calibrate the digital dakota in.

i rewired the alt.what happen was is that the light i was using as a resistor, was wired into another light. this light only came on during my headlights.so it wasnt rehcarging.so instead i kept the resistor/light and wired into directly into my 12v source.not it lights up during cranking and shuts off once it is running.

for anyone else doing this.if the light stays on while the engine is running, this means ur alt is bad.

jim i know u were helping but u were also insulting my intelligence.i know im not a wiring genuis, never said i was but i know how to read yellow/lavender blue as vss in to speedo.and i know how to read the tach wire.that is why i ask questions cuz maybe there is something i missed when i figured i wired it in right.

but i still appreciate all ur help.u do not know how much u have helped this backyard hobbyist.i also thank brian hinson.grant at grannys.bryan may.cdk4219.dana at lt1350.com.turtle and everyone else at torquecentral.com

once everything i have done is worked out and working correctly i will document it and do a write up.this way it lets me screw up and fix it,so any followers do not have to.i will also write up a checklist and troubleshooting guide.

thanx to all.

sorry jim i just realized something u pointed out on ur schematics.

the orange wire.is this the same orange wire that goes to ur vss unit?i believe it is.it would just seem wierd if the whole cluster grounds to one 22g wire going to use vss unit.on top of this ur vss wire colors are different on the auto tranny.we might be speaking of 2 different orange wires or are we?

Wouldn't it be faster just to e-mail each other back and forth?

MT= Manual Transmission, but the wiring should be the same for automatic RX-7s also. If the wiring colors were different for the auto, they would be enclosed in parentheses.

On page T-28 of the 1993 Service Highlights manual, it shows terminal 3C of the dash harness as being the pulsed signal from the speed sender, and terminal 3A as being ground for the circuit.

In schematic C-1a (page Z-42) of the 1995 Wiring Diagram manual, terminal 3C is green (G) and terminal 3A is orange (O).

I apologize if you felt my wiring descriptions were condescending, but these threads do hang around for awhile, and there are people who A) do not have the wiring manuals, and B) perhaps don't know how to read them well who can benefit from this information also. If trying to be absolutely clear is also being condescending, then so be it.
