Hi I have a greddy m spec fmic and a koyo radiator I was wondering what you all Though about converting it all to a v mount set up, also with a v mount will it still be efficient with a stock hood with no vents.
Thanks

I had a FMIC and converted to a V-mount (custom). I increased some lower end power by converting. I made the FMIC work but wanted to shift as much power to the low end as I could since I have a GT3574R which spools a little slow at high altitude. so that was my motivation. My water temps were fine with the FMIC and where just as good after the V-mount conversion. Where I really saw an improvement was spool and intake air temps. I ducted both the radiator and intercooler and placed my air filter in the front bumper with a velocity stack. This was the most valuable part of swapping it over.

If you do decide to swap it over, I suggest getting cold air to the intake as priority number 1, get a large air filter, as large as you can fit. Then duct the radiator, and then fit the intercooler in whatever is left and make piping for it and a duct. this seems to work the best for everything.

3 of us run this with stock hoods and all work very well. I ducted the top part of my intercooler (not shown in pics) to prevent a lot of air from hitting the underside of the hood, the duct directs it over the engine smoothly. This helped a ton with the front end moving around, much more stable at 120+mph now.

Thanks for the info, did you cutoff intercooler hose ends and make them come straight out so there is less tubing. BTW on my greddy intercooler it has like a 90 degree bend if that makes any sense.
Thanks

I sold my front mount and converted an old greddy FMIC to work for my set up.

OK so the m spec front mount greddy I have can be converted easily and what about the radiator mod.
Thanks

It wasn't an M spec its the old one.

this is what it looks like (although I didn't use this exact one).

I use to do something similar. Its not an easy job.
Here are some links you can see how we did it.

Just buy the RX-7 store kit if you are going to do that. You can sell your existing setup and save a tone of time.

We don't do the intercoolers any longer, just the vmount radiator.

Hi Jason on the intercooler did you cut off the pipping on the intercooler and weld on new piping to radiator or did you just shorten the intercooler pipe, BTW by pipe I mean the end caps on intercooler were the couplers would go on.
Thanks

I'm in the process of converting my Greddy FMIC for VMIC use right now. May not be ideal for my setup because it's enormous and may be a lot of work but I like custom rather than off the shelf solutions. If it doesn't work well then I simply get a different IC and start over.

I think the intercooler is too large. you can really shrink the intercooler and be just fine. the important part is getting cold air to the intake, then the intercooler doesn't have to work as hard.

I tuned this guys car and he was fine with a MR2 intercooler I think the core is something like 7" x 9" x 3.5 or 4" thick. the important take away, duct all incoming air to an exchanger and the intake filter. don't go too large on the intercooler.

Wow looks good you guys, hi turk82 what do you think, I plan on cutting the intercooler inlets and rotating them instead of re making intercooler side tanks. Keep the posts coming as other can benefit.
Thanks

Another local guy here with a V-mount. super low intake temps, would like to see a larger filter for a lower pressure drop.

I completely agree with you that this core is much too large but I had it in storage and figured I'd see what I could do with it rather than buy another core. with my setup I will be ducting fresh air to the filter.

You can attempt to rotate them and you might have better success than I did trying that. The problem I ran into was that the end tanks are cast and not uniformly round when you cut them in certain spots. The other issue for me was my turbo location, I needed to create room for a filter and ducting on the turbo side so you may run into that issue as well.

OK I may try to rotate the ends but I do still need to figure out the turbo air intake as I am not sure were I am going to route it. BTW with the turbo intake what if I made like a pyramid shape on top of intercooler and routed the turbo air intake to the top of the pyramid to pick up air that goes through intercooler if that makes sense, would the air be pretty cool if it came through the intercooler.

Lookatme- I'd like to see a pic if you ic exit duct if you don't mind. That's something I've thought about for some time now. I'm pleased to hear it seems to be working.
