Hey murphy, I see you are taking a lot of fire...people sometimes speak out of historical context, but you may not understand why... here is a quick point of view.

When I was 16 I drove a 72 LTD. It was like being sentenced to prison.

When I was about 18, I got my Roadrunner going. 350+ HP 4 speed automatic 3.91 posi. It was fast, but not too fast. It would break high 13's. We street raced alot. In about 1988, we crashed it at 120 mph on the interstate. The car slid sideways for hundreds of feet, hit a sign and launched into oncomming traffic. We laugh about it now. It scared the hell out of me then...

When I was about 21 I bought a 70 GTX 440 Six Pack car 4.10 Dana 3500 stall, that was almost non-streetable. The first 5 minutes I drove it, I almost piled it into the opposite ditch from a hole shot, simply because the back tires did not have the same pressure. It was over 450 HP.

My home town was full of fast cars. All my buddies drove fast and raced. I am 36 now and many of them are dead. My good friend Brett was killed in 1986. Lost control on a curve going into town. Car flipped end over end through a bill board. My dad was on the highway and saw the accident and came back to help. Brett died in his hands. Afterwards my dad came home screaming biligerantly at me about fast cars. He was really upset. I later found out that literally a dozen of his friends died in the 60's from stupid antics like my friend just pulled. Back then, they used to road race from town to the next town. When they got to the next town, they would call back to the starting point from the destination gas station. Two of my dad's friends never called. ANother two burned to death in a ditch along the highway. It wasn't until my fifth friend died that I started to fully understand my dad's reaction.

Speed kills. You don't live often through a high speed accident. The FD is a way cool car, and I am like you. I really like these cars, BUT, only mixed with good sense. I love cars, but it is not nearly as exciting to me as it once was, and I have little ambition to push it to the max as I once did. 255 ponies in this car is a rocket, let alone some of the crazy things people do.

I am fully aware of how I was invincible from the age of 17 to the age of 25. I also bet that we are alot alike in this aspect too. No one is saying to you that you should not pursue your dream car. Just understand that people believe youth and high performance don't mix well. Do yourself a favor. Buy a fixer upper and start a project with your dad or whoever. After you have your blood and sweat in it, you will be less likely to wrap it around a telephone pole. Don't ever drink and drive it when you get it.

second, if youre looking to get a cheap deal on a 7, youre probably asking for trouble. most rx7's that go for low cash probably have something thats not operating correctly, if not everything. you want to find something that has been treated well, even if you have to spend a little more...especially if youre looking for something that has low miles. and if you want to convert it to 99spec, thats more money you have to invest. i would want to put that money towards reliability mods...

do some searching...read the newbie threads and then read more, there is a ton of info on these cars.

check the classifieds section if you still cant get the seven out of your head
Enough said!!! I bought one of the cleanest, well maintained and low mileage FD's I have ever seen, as a matter of fact it was in mint condition and religously cared for and I still had a bunch of issues pop up and it was down for almost a year (granted I took the winter and my time to do it). Anyway get my point, it is a good car for fun not for reliability. Don't do it even if you you think you know what you are getting into. also to convert to Efini is going to cost you a boat load of money, you have no idea. I have done just minor stuff and saved thousands of dollars doing it and I have already spend at least an extra $5000 since I bought it. It is nowhere close to done. You are better off with an Evo or Honda for your first ride. Unless you know a lot about the rotary 13b and have lots of spare time and even more spare cash. good luck.

Exclamation Civic = 9mm, FD=.44 magnum

I'm a 22 year old noob. Owned my FD for 6 months now.

What a fellow noob (who owns an FD and has done quite a bit of tinkering on his FD) has to say to another noob (who doesn't own an FD):

I'm glad I kept my daily driver: Civic; Hell, I'm glad I have a daily driver.

I'm glad the FD was not my first car else I'd be dead now or be missing half of my face.

I'm glad I learned to drive well with my Civic FIRST and made tuning mistakes on the civic first.

I'm lucky I have steady reflexes in easing the throttle when the rear kicks out. A beginner might act more rash in such situations, especially if they aren't aware that these cars might do so.

I'm glad I have cashflow as well as reserve money to fund this car which I didn't have before I graduated from college.

People start off shooting 9mm's and 45 ACP's before they jump to .357 magnums and .44 magnums- I believe (or am I just wimpy?). Is that a good analogy? If you don't have experience with guns and know how to handle the recoil in the first place, you shouldn't learn with a high caliber- even if the gun looks good in your hands. You could kill someone!

- 'Converting' a car to 99 spec costs a whole lot more than you can resell it for. You can't flip cars like condos.

- $9k will not get you a running FD. There is something fishy about that FD ad - either the buyer or seller would be making a mistake.

- You are not equipped, mentally, skillwise, or of sufficient maturity yet to drive this car. Your responses in this thread alone are sufficient evidence. Get something else and when you turn 18 or 20 or 22 and have a real, disposable income, buy the FD as a second car. Nearly any other car will be more practical.

- "i have decided what i am getting so thats what i plan on getting". If you said that within arms reach of me in person I'd slap you for being a brat. The problem is that you're not taking this stuff seriously, and you should be. The fact that you're new to the car and lack knowledge is not the problem - the problem is you don't care to learn what you need to learn.

Dave
Dave is damn right. Thanks Dave. this thread is rediculous, let the dude go out and **** some stuff up. Who cares, he asked for advice and now he gets it. Your really stirring up the pot right now, if you know everything already "Why are you asking?" just do what you got to do.
