Undertray with aftermarket bumper?

Hi, i'm thinking about getting a body kit for the rx7 but i'm concerned about it not having a undertray. Do you think i can use the stock one? Or maybe i or my bodyshop could fabricate one out of sheetmetal? Any idea's would be appercated! Thanks guys . . .

Question

Which body kit were you thinking of buying? Alot of B/kit manufacturers make undertrays to match their bumper.

Ive seen some write ups about people making their own out of ABS plastic.

I think Damian did a post a few months ago regarding undertrays..

Anyone else ?

sheet metal as fine as long as it is light weight and has some guiding fins on on the inside. I was going to do this but decided Carbon fiber would be better. Actually speaking of which tell me what type of front bumper you are looking at and we can discuss some possible carbon fiber under trays if you like?

Why would carbon fiber be a better choice for an undertray as compared to sheet metal? Carbon fiber is much more suspeptible to failure from impacts than steel, which is not a trait I would look for in an undertray!

I have the CWest front end. The stock undertray did not fit, so I made one from aluminum sheet metal. I made it in 3 pieces, and it seems to work fine.

then again if done right carbon fiber will be much stronger than a sheet of steel and lighter as well. Also carbon is far more ridgid and I dont like the Idea of having floppy sheet metal under my car. if you want a stiff piece you need to go pretty thick. At wich poitn you should start looking at aluminum to save weight. Or am I wrong?

CF is stronger than sheet metal when it comes to bending/breaking, but for puntures, sheetmetal will bend a little when CF wil just shatter. What I mean is, it's easier to poke a hole in CF than it is to poke a hole in sheet metal.

LOOKS? It's the undertray! It's not even visible.....

Carbon fiber will shatter when subjected to impact, unlike sheet metal, which will just dent. As far as weight savings go, I fail to see why anyone who's installing an aftermarket front bumper would be concerned about a few pounds.....

Do you have pics of this?

I'd also like a guide on how to do this. I'm sure it's a no brainer but i'd be nice to have someone with some experience chime in on this. I'm in the military so i can go to a hobby shop and get some advice on how to fabricate this Thanks again!

Punture. You can poke a hole in it easier than you can metal. You can throw a rock through a carbon fiber undertray, but not a metal one...at least not as easily.

Carbon Fiber

as far as carbon/kevlar goes: if it is done right it would be just as resistant to puncture, (think bullet proof vest). and by done right I mean 2 pieces of CF with honeycomb or similar sandwiched in between, not a single piece of cf.

as far as shattering goes it happens with the cheaply made carbon fiber that is not properly cured. Someone check me on this, but i think Carbon fiber shatters because it's resistence to compression is greater than its strength. it makes sense then that if it was not cured properly (not made strong enough) that it would shatter more easily.

Thats absolutely right i have an entire book on the subject so when I say carbon kevlar compound i ment with the honeycomb sandwhiched inbetween 2 layers of carbon. Kevlar by the way is used in bullet proof vests but thats liek kevlar 126 or soemthing. There are many diffrent kinds of carbon weaves and compounds just like kevlars and what not. Anyways its what most of the JDM tuners use when they make fornt lips. Such as FEED and SAN AI. So what now Rynberg ?!?!?!?! just messin.

I think alot of them make it in carbon because they know some people will pay a million dollars for anything in carbon..

700+ for a undertray? Holy **** . . . does that come with a kick in the nuts too? I can't do **** by myself but i'm sure i can find someone to fabricate one out of sheet metal for at most $150; i might even do it my damn self if someone would supervise me on how to make one.
