Question #1

If my car is making slight clunking noises, what are some of the primary culprits I should look into investigating/replacing first. The chasis has 140,000 miles approx, so Im assuming alot of the bushings are either shot or in the process of approaching death.

I think this car has the origional transmission. It makes a horrendous noise in first and second gear when accelerating, this horrible grinding noise. My brother says it is the result of a bad bearing located in the tranny. Is this a fairly easy piece to fix once the tranny is dropped???

Would I be better off just finding a good used or new tranny and swapping them out?

yeah dude swap that baby out , if it's original tranny with that much milage you need to get new **** for it if you plan on modding it and keeping it 1st question i dont know havnty experience it yet probly will though.

1. The clunking noises are most likely due to bad bushings. (most likely the pillowballs, which I sent you a link to in your other thread)

2. Does it make this sound while in idle, or while just cruising in 1st and 2nd gear? If it makes it while cruising, then it is most likely just transmission noise. You can muffle it if you insulate your center console a little more.

the noise goes away if the clutch is pushed in at idle, once the clutch engages you can hear it, once you accelerate it grows louder.

Does it have an oscillating Wa Wa Wa sound like the sound is growing in volume and receding and then coming back?

And the sound is most prominent in 1st and 2nd?

It could be your main input bearing rotating in its race. Its not supposed to. In 1st and 2nd gear the torque ratio or lever arm is the largest on 1st and 2nd. Therefore if the main input bearing is loose or worn or whatever, it will cause the main bearing to move around.

Replacing the main bearing may not cure it b/c now it has cause all other components inside the tranny to move around. The cost of replacing the main bearings, syncros was about $2000

In my case, I got a low mile tranny for $2000.00. Still have the bad tranny and one of these days will send it out for a rebuild.
