maybe its louder because you have your windows rolled down. People usually keep them up when its cold out???

You could have blown out the wadding in your exhaust.

You may have an exhaust leak. I had a leak (downpipe gasket) and I could hear them spool up really good. I fixed the leak and the spool up was not nearly as loud. I actually really liked hearing it, but you cant drive around with an exhuast leak.

Have you noticed an abnormal boost pattern in conjunction with the acute turbo noise??

that sound you hear from the exhaust leak has nothing to do with the turbos. i had a small leak in my N/A 86 corolla and it sounded exactly like a turbo spool. this could def be the problem.
